Do you donate to National Animal Welfare Groups & Organizations?

Many people really believe that their donations to the ASPCA or HSUS go to their local animal shelters, when in fact, they don't.

A clear distinction should be made between the large national groups and the local shelters. People should donate to the national groups but know that their money is going to other types of efforts, as opposed to saving pets in their local communities.

Additionally, there are many examples of the HSUS and the ASPCA coming into these large seizure situations, then leaving the animals in the care of local shelters and rescues without offering funding.

It's only fair that everyone understands the distinction between the large national groups and the local organizations, so they can be fully versed on how their funds are being used. It's just about transparency.

Donate to your LOCAL Rescue Groups AND to the National ones.



I've always given much more to several national orgs but will make sure to donate more to my local ones now.

To a shelter in Iron River Michigan. 4 of our 8 kids came from there, too.

2. I don't donate to those two.

And I rarely agree with Winograd on the big orgs, but that's neither here nor there. I run a rescue that's a charity, and that's where most of my money goes (obviously). Not that I don't appreciate what HSUS and the ASPCA do.

3. I donate to Best Friends,

the animal rescue in Utah. It is no kill and they take in all types of animals. And I have been donating monthly to Northshore rescue in New York for years. It is also no kill.

and I sometimes foster for the local no-kill rescue.

5. The "AND" is a very important qualifier.

Donating only to local groups doesn't help move the national awareness / debate on animal rights forward in the same way that donating to large, (inter-)national organizations does.

Both are incredibly important, I think. That's not to say, of course, that the national orgs haven't made some missteps. :blush:
