Safari getting hung up?
I'm relatively new to the MAC - I got the new iMac in November - and have gotten frustrated with safari... on just about every webpage, it will start to load and then just stop for a good 30-60 seconds. And, even on the pages where it does load fairly smoothly, it is awfully slow.

I have a nearly 5 year old Dell PC that was not one of their top of the line models when we bought it, yet it is much faster on the internet using IE than the Mac with safari if I switch my DSL cable over to the old PC.

1. make sure your safari is up to date...
Version 2.0.3 (417.9)

Also, run software update from time to time.

2. That's odd, Safari it pretty fast for me. I would run software update
and make sure your software is up to date.

I would first clear the cache. (Empty cache under Safari in the menu bar)

If you don't have a maintenance app, get this one. it is free.

macJanitor

Use it every week or two.

If you want another browser, a lot of people love Firefox
http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/

Here's another I like a lot. It's light and very fast. I find it more pleasing to the eye than Firefox.

5. I empty the cache just about every week
maybe sometimes even more often. I also clear the history, too.

6. When you clear the cache and history the browser has to start
from point Zero in rendering the page. I suggested clearing the cache was just in case it was getting too large.

Having the cache and history makes for faster browsing because the elements of the site have already been downloaded.

Do check out the other browsers I mentioned.

3. Safari is plenty fast

Do what the others above say to do. Also, do you have enought RAM? Check the Activity Monitor and see just what's happening. If you have a bunch of stuff open and then open Safari, it will crawl if you don't have 512 or know how to handle it with 256. Go to the Apple site and check out support and the forums. Much free advice available there.

Edit: Make sure you click on "block popup windows".

4. It's an almost brand new computer
It was new in November of 2005. Unfortunately, if I knew they'd be able to get Macs out there with Intel chips in 2 months instead of the promised year, I would have waited.

I normally click on safari first thing and do not open anything else. So, it is often the only thing open and it still gets hung up.

Also, I can sometimes access password protected sites, other times I cannot. Meaning, if I wanted to view my resume on monster.com, I had no problem. But, if I wanted to register for a new job site, I was not able to do that - sometimes.

7. Try the new Camino browser
Many like it better than Safari.

9. Checking that you have enough RAM
and checking your connection speed are the two things I would check.

There are sites on the internet where you can check connection speed for free. I don't have a site, but google it and see what comes up.

10. safari has blown out on me a few times.
try "reset safari" under the safari menu. this clears all the cache, cookies, everything.

if that doesnt work I would toss it out and download a new copy.

if its just one website it could be a java or plug in issue. safari is not quite 100% compatible.

12. Not so far, it doesn't get hung up
And I wish you luck. But all browsers hang or crash on *my* i-mac. I even replaced the Panther os with Tiger and it still happens, less often, but this includes Firefox and every other browser known to macdom. They all work for a while and gradually they don't work, no matter how much maintenace I put in. They start eating up CPU and memory first and then they start crashing. When Safari works, it works as fast or faster than Firefox, but Firefox is more apt to go bad for me. Every single browser I have is up to date. I have Onyx and several other apps. I used DiskWarror, Applejack, you name it. No problem shows up and nothing I do helps, not fixing permissions or preferences or fonts or anything, except the problem is considerably less intense on Tiger than Panther. I had a repair guy here for four hours and he couldn't find what was wrong, either.

When it all goes bad, I switch to Opera for the rest of the day and hope for the best tomorrow.
