Anybody ever replaced a power supply in a G5? |
|
I have one of the first Power Mac G5s (the Dual 1.8, I believe), and I think my power supply is gone. Have any of you ever replaced the power supply in yours?
(No, I have no more warranty. Every possible protection I could have had has run out.)

1. My warranty had also run out on my iMac G5 |

But because there was a special exception for the power supply, it was replaced for free. It has to do with the range of serial numbers. If yours falls within that range they will replace it.

Well, I take that back. I actually took the PSU apart and replaced the fan (which had failed). Then I put the unit back in and it worked fine.
You can find replacement PSU's on eBay. Typically they are parts cannibalized from another machine.
It's not a difficult procedure as long as you are handy with tools and are mindful of the lethal voltages involved. In fact you could probably find a step-by-step procedure online.

I also have a dual 1.8 that I bought right after they came out and the power supply went soon after buying it. I attributed this to the fact that I had my computer plugged into a power strip that I would shut off at night (essentially unplugging the Mac). Once I got the new PS, I stopped "unplugging" it and it's been fine ever since.
