new iPhone 3GS has an UNDERCLOCKED PROCESSOR!! |

http://www.rapidrepair.com/guides/iphone-3g-s-repair/iphone-3g-s-comparison-chart.htmlhttp://www.wired.com/gadgetlab/2009/06/iphone-teardown-reveals-underclocked-833mhz-cpu/Given how CPUs are branded for rated speed, it's possible the CPU may not be officially rated for 833MHz... on the other hand, CPU manufacturers are known to send out faster units, underclocked and labeled as such, if the demand is there. I suspect the demand is there...

1. under clocking = less power = less heat |
|
as opposed to making a processor that's exactly 4xxMhz.
It makes sense really, this keeps the overall power and heat consumption of the unit much lower than if you use a purpose built processor. and i imagine it's a lot cheaper.
there's probably a chip manufacturer in that part of china that makes one processor and allows companies to throttle it as needed.
rather clever really... its' just a pity that apple makes all their stuff in china, where human rights is a word never uttered.. in any language.
