1. I can't answer your tuner card question, but I found installing Ubuntu onto a Mac

to be a nontrivial exercise, which ultimately cost me something like five days to get right. During the course of my experiments, I temporarily lost the ability to use my CD drive and had to resort to a USB flash drive copy of the OSX install disk

I ain't exactly MacGyver, so maybe I'll just buy a DVR and end up stuffing a big drive in the G4 and use it for a media server.
