I'm cooking smoked spare ribs on the pit for tonight

I am making a lettuce and tomato salad and microwave baked potatoes to go along with them too.

3. Have you ever tried putting the potatoes on the smoker?

I always use wood chips when I grill on the gas grill, and put the spuds on the rack for awhile with smoke before I grill. Any left over potatoes make an interesting potato salad later.

4. do you have a cover for the pit? or just smoke the ribs in the open?

I close the lid.
