2. Beautiful stuff, but still beyond my budget.
I bought my daughter a piece of Lodge enameled cast iron for Christmas last year and she loves it. She has been dropping hints, so I have gotten her another piece this year. I wish I could afford the Le Creuset, because I'm sure the quality is better than the Lodge.

12. The Lodge cast iron is made in China and some people have a problem with that.
My daughter has used the piece I got her last year several times and loves it. She hasn't had any problems with it at all. It's a really pretty piece and the quality seems to be good.

15. oh I guess we are both right
From the Lodge web site:

Are Lodge products made in the USA?
All of our foundry seasoned cast iron products, including the Signature Series, are manufactured in the USA. Our Lodge Enamel items are imported from China.

4. ummm ummm ummm ..........
Thanks for posting that link.

I normally wouldn't consider such a purchase but I love Le Creuset. This is a 2 quart saucepan and an 8" frying pan. Quality product(s) - and useful for those of us that either cook smaller portions or for fewer folks.

That just might have to be my reward for deep cleaning and re-organizing the kitchen......

That's a good enough excuse, right?

10. sounds like a perfect reason to get a new pan to me

I just cleaned out a bunch of stuff too, ebayed some and donated the rest.

I have some excellent cast and enamel cast pieces I kinda quit using due to the weight, but hell, I've been working out and got GUNS now, I'll have to drag those babies back out

5. The square baker might make a nicely shaped loaf of bread if the pan is big enough

6. We just bought the cheapie aldi version of these
For others who aren't willing to shell out that kind of money for the brand name enameled cast iron, aldi's is selling them again. We found this at the end of their sale but they were still decently stocked.

I got a braiser ($30), a large fry pan and the grill pan (both $18). All with blue exterior and the pans have black enameled interior, it's not the uncoated cast iron even though it looks like it. I tossed out my old costco skillet with the nostick that was starting to scuff but not the glass lid for it because it fits the new fry pan perfectly.

I'm excited. My stove is over 20 years old and the cooktop had rusted through and cracked on the edges. We were getting worried it might become a safety hazard if it collapsed onto the pilot lights, and it was hideously embarrassingly ugly. We found a replacement top online for $80 instead of having to buy a whole new stove, it came this week and is shiny and perfectly white, and the blue enamel looks nice on them. I feel like my whole kitchen got a face lift.

Anyway. If anyone's been wanting to try enameled cast iron this is a pretty cheap option and who knows, they may even drop the price a little more. I had $100 in Christmas gift money so this was a sort of free splurge for me - and I still have a little left after buying all three pieces. :)

13. My Le Creuset experience
We were looking for a cast iron dutch oven smaller than our current one, and Lodge didn't have anything in the size we were looking for. So one day when we happened to be in the neighborhood we stopped at the Le Creuset outlet store, which claimed to be having a sale. We found the pot we wanted, as well as some other kitchen item we needed at the time. The clerk told us if we bought one more item we'd get 30% off the entire lot - "Doesn't matter what it is - one of those cheap wooden spoons or a potholder will do". Then, as he was adding things up, he asked if I was over 55 by any chance, since it was "Extra discount for seniors Tuesday". The total, including tax, ended up being less than the pot was selling for in the first place.

I'm still partial to Lodge, but Le Creuset does have a wide selection and at least at one store really good service. Oh, the dutch oven is the right size for deep-frying and smaller stews.

I have found some La Creuset stuff occasionally at Marshalls- but you have to dig around on the shelves for it. I bought a bunch of All-Clad at the AC sale last Christmas, so I've been going easy on the cookware.
