What's for diner tonight?
I'm thinking fish and chips (at home) and a salad.
What's cooking where you are?

16. I'm in the pit of my annual holiday depression
so I'm not cooking a hell of a lot of anything right now. In fact, I'm making meals out of a bowl of mixed veg and nothing else.

I'll be back to myself when all the gaiety is over and done with.

It doesn't help that I'm sick of my 1946 kitchen and would love to find the idiot who designed it and chain him to the stove for about 6 months so that if he designs kitchens when he's reincarnated, he'll do better ones.

3. A simple little Stir Fry for us...
oh, and it came out quite good.

A neighbor and I hit the big H-Mart in Burlington MA yesterday and loaded up with some strange and wonderful stuff.
So...

ham, and king-something mushrooms, and this odd green veg that looked like a green apple, and broccoli stems, and bean sprouts, onion, celery, and noodles
some chicken broth, chili sauce, and hoisin...

oh, yes - quite good. Thank goodness...

7. no taste - more a feel
it was cool and crisp and fried nicely - like zuc without the seeds or skin - but held up well.

11. It's like an apple...

tasting it raw, it was good too - crisp and clean tasting - fresh.

No sweetness, no fibrous stuff, this one had no seeds, the skin was thin and tasty too.

I wish I could grow it in NH! and I really wish I'd bought more... :9

13. I love H-Mart!
but it's not nearby so it's more of an outing for us. It's fun to look at all the stuff and try to figure out what it is. :)

The prices are good, too.

15. it's so easy it isn't even a recipe hardly
Begin a couple of hours before mealtime.

I start with tenderized meat, like cube steak. Lean meat is just too tough to use untenderized, IMO. Dredge the pieces in flour seasoned with salt & pepper and brown them on both sides in a skillet with a bit of cooking oil. Slice a large yellow onion and lay the slices on top of the browned meat. Dump leftover flour on top (there should be half a cup or so of flour). Put some sprigs of thyme and rosemary in. (Dried if you don't have fresh available.) Add half a cup of liquid (sometimes I use leftover coffee; beef broth is fine or even just water). Put on the lid, and turn the pan to simmer. Check it every half hour or so -- add a bit more liquid if needed, move the pieces around, etc.

It makes its own gravy. Woohoo!

I know that many people make a tomato-y swiss steak. I like that, too. Canned stewed tomatoes, some garlic, some bell pepper, etc. Alton Brown adds bacon fat. That couldn't go wrong. :-)

10. I've been thinking about doing a spicy lentil burrito filling
I love lentil soup too. I played with a lentil loaf recipe a couple of years back. I loved it but Bill was ambivalent. :)
The pineapple sounds like a great addition to chicken salad. I've added grapes and walnuts before...but never pineapple. Hmm...gotta try that!

We devoured this in no time. I never used Marsala in cooking before, must admit it does give a different taste to the gravy.

Forgot to post the thread earlier.
I'm still using up all the ground beef we bought, so it was blue cheese burgers tonight.
I'm heading back to vegetarianism, but still doing some meat at dinner.

27. This has been a monster day.
The tree is beautiful and dinner was simple and good. The tree is a 7' balsam. I have many light ornaments and lots of tiny ornaments because balsam was the only kind of tree we would afford for years and years. I love the fragrance of the fresh tree and the ornaments, especially shiny things (kinda like a chicken in that respect, lol) and handmade pieces--lots of toys and teddy bear ornaments, angels, fruits, animals and of course, gifts from friends. You'll get motivated to decorate the tree. It's nice to have a huge 'bouquet' in the house a nice change of scenery, too. I may have accidentally given myself a butt lift going up and down the ladder so many times. My muscles ache but when I look at the tree, the little kid inside thanks me with a great big smile. Have fun!
