Dreamfields has shrunk its pasta pkg. to 13 oz. |
|
Damn them. Same price, almost 3 oz. less than before.

2. Run for your lives. It's the Incredible Shrinking Retail Package! |
|
Rather than raise the nominal price, almost all of these companies are raising the real price by "downsizing" the contents of the package. Some of the most deceptive are even creating packaging with false bottoms, etc., to make it look like the same volume or weight previously sold.
The one that really made me mad this spring was my favorite brand of potting mix at Home Depot, which is Pro Mix by Premier. Last couple of years, a 2 cubic foot compressed bale, which yielded 4 cubic feet of mix when "fluffed up" was $13. This year, they have a new package -- 1 cubic foot "semi-" compressed, which yields 1.5 cubic feet of mix, for $12. This is more than doubling the price. I was able to stock up on the old bales in early April when they had both old and new on the shelves and I figured out what they were doing. Next year, I'll just have to find something else that isn't so expensive or deceptively packaged.

4. I used to get those compressed bales of potting mix at the feed store. |

IIRC, it was much cheaper than Home Depot or Lowes.
Oh, and HoneyMaid Graham Crackers have also shrunk their product. I thought it "felt" different in the store, but couldn't remember how much the package was supposed to weigh. When I got home, I could easily stand the box upright in my cupboard, when, in the past, I had to wedge it in because it was too tall. The wrapped crackers inside the box probably contain 4 fewer crackers per package. It was really obvious when I tried to make a graham cracker crust with only one package, which I always have done in the past.

3. We've only ever bought Dreamfields in 13.25 oz packages. |
|
A lot of pasta seems to be shrinking this way. Barilla and DeCecco are still available in our Safeway at a full 16 oz, but I have seen them at 13.25 elsewhere. Most of the "other**" kinds of pasta is already 13.25. **Other = whole wheat, whole grain, etc. This is the package we get here and have always gotten. http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_pov0TgR0eJQ/S92FFMT-juI/AAAAAAAAEpE/5XXWj3Vm7AY/s1600/Dreamfields+Penne.gif

5. Just like everything else, it seems. |
|
The pre-cut and pre-shredded cheeses that used to be 8 oz. are now 7 oz. They've stopped shrinking cartons of ice cream. Now, they're back to jacking up the prices. Six bucks or more around here for a quart and a half!
