OK, what happened to the price of Haas avocados? |
|
They were only 99 cents a few months ago and now they're $1.79, $1.89, $1.99 . . .
By contrast, Florida avocados, which are three times the size of Haas, are 99 cents.
Was there a bad crop? Speculators?

1. Catching up with the prices in California? |
|
From reasons I can't fathom, a lot of produce grown in California is cheaper on the other side of the country than it is here. The best prices I can get for Haas is $1.50 each - and that's at the farmers' market.

2. Pricey here, too. Paid $1.49 at the store yesterday. |
|
I've been slicing them for salads, so that stretches one pretty well, but guacamole is an EXPENSIVE dish these days.

3. Use the larger 99-cent Florida avocado for guacamole. |

4. They never seem to show up in the grocery stores here. |
|
No idea why.
I try to catch the Haas when they go on sale, but I splurged yesterday b/c I really wanted it in last night's salad. (We eat a lot on entree salads for dinner and my garden provides many of the ingredients, so an occasional cameo appearance by an exotic veggie or fruit is much-appreciated by mr beac. ;) )

6. I'm so old, I remember buying them 7 for $1.00 |
|
:-). If I could grow avocados in Pennsylvania, I would have an orchard full!

7. I've noticed this too, but ... |
|
... even at half the price, those big "Florida" avocados still aren't worth it. There isn't that much more to eat on them (the seed is bigger too), and they are almost flavorless.
