CCleaner http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/ This is good to run often

Regseeker http://www.hoverdesk.net/freeware.htm This is good to run pretty often

Reghealer http://www.zoneutils.com/regheal/index.htm This is my all time favorite that I use after a fresh install of my xp home and occasionally thereafter

After running these three I can see a very noticeable speed improvement. None of these have caused me any problems ever to top it off whereas some I've tried have.

Add: Wise registry cleaner on the other hand has caused me some problems in the past so I won't put a link up for it.

Windows Live One Care online scanner.

3. I think that it's generally believed that a combo approach is best
But, it's also generally believed that as far as cleaning the registry goes, you *can* have too much of a good thing.

There was a time when I wanted my registry squeaky clean, I mean I did not want one entry in there that didn't need to be. Well, first off that was an overwhelming task, so I gave up on it soon enough. But along the way, I think I learned that you just have to accept some "stuff" in your registry that maybe doesn't have to be there, but it's not really hurting.

All that said, for routine, safe maintenance, I use CCleaner, as many here do.

I also use, less frequently, a variety of other tools, including Wise Registry Cleaner (and yes, it can let you get into trouble), Reg Seeker, RegVac and RegCleaner, to name a few.

I also keep NTREGOPT handy to optimize the registry every now and then.

4. Just about the best thing
I've done for my registry is use Revo Uninstaller for every uninstall.
