Putting aside copyright issues, how does one, technically, download videos from YouTube and news sites and such?

you can get the extension "Downloadhelper" that makes it very easy. There are other programs/extensions also but I find that one very easy.

I do use Firefox but I really haven't used extensions yet, and many believe that is what makes Firefox so great.
Thanks. I will search for that and no doubt find other extension that are helpful, too.

I started using it years ago when I got frustrated that YouTube would sometimes remove videos I wanted to watch again. http://www.downloadhelper.net
