I still can't do it right. On my remote site, I do not get the /public_html/ that shows on the how to for FileZilla. Basically there is nothing there. I tried using active and passive ports, and had to create an exception to the Windows firewall to do that, but still it doesn't show, and still, when I right click on the files, download does not light up/is not available. Any ideas? It seems like maybe I am not connecting right, or not getting into the directory, or what? dc

1. It's hard to diagnose what's going on |
|
Try reading the top-most pane in Filezilla - directly above the split Local/Remote panes. It shows a connection dialogue in coloured type. Blue, green, black when it's good, red for errors.
Let us know what it says there when you try to connect, or better still, can you post a screenshot of Filezilla with your settings.

2. It says connected, and all kinds of other things. If I go to server |
|
and the drop down menu, it says disconnect, which I can do, and then it shows red, disconnected. Also, the files on the right populate, there is a list, and I can click on them. But if I right click (I never double click) instead of getting download the download is real hazy, and I cannot click on it. Only on edit/save but from there it doesn't go anyplace. Do I need to go to the website and enable the admin file to allow editing or something? dc

3. Per your previous thread about editing |
|
I assume you managed to get files from the server, edit them and put them back.
Can you still do that by dragging files from the server pane to the local pane? Can you put files on the server by dragging?
If you right click in the local pane, does Upload work or is it greyed out too?
The only reason I can think of that disables the right click download command is that you haven't entered the correct user name or password. If you can still move files by dragging, it would sort of negate that theory.
There should be no need to enable anything via the web control panel if you are logging in with the right credentials.

5. We need to backtrack again to the previous thread |

Where I mentioned setting up local folders for your web files with Old/New etc
I can't see the point of dragging anything to the desktop when you could, using the left pane of Filezilla to navigate, drag it straight to a folder, such as your newly created 'Old' folder, make your edits then Save As to your New folder. From New you would drag it back to it's original place on the server to overwrite. You also have an intact copy of the original file in case your edits go pear-shaped.
I have an obsession with keeping files in folders; it's hard work being a Virgo and an INTJ. David, best get into a system early on, before you are up to your ears in files that look similar and are scattered all over your computer.
Oh, yep, you should be able to drag the file back to the server!
