Suggestions for graphics tools for use on CafePress?

I'm looking to put up some merchandise on CafePress.com. I've got numerous ideas, but am not sure how to go about doing the graphics. I'm pretty tech-literate, but I've never used graphics programs before. I don't have any commercial software, but I have downloaded Gimp. Problem is, I have no idea how to use it. I've done some text images by using a doc program and saving it as a jpg.

Is there an easier way to do simple graphics without being a graphic designer? Are there graphics already done that I can either use for free, or pay a licensing fee?
