I want to try Ubuntu, but it's putting my monitor to sleep.
I attempt to boot from the CD, but almost immediately I get a message that my monitor is going to sleep. Then, that's it: lights out. I can't do anything to revive my monitor, other than shut off the computer and restart in Windows.

I've tried reading other forums to find a solution, but all of the answers seem different, and they involve typing in some blah-blah-blah command, and it is not clear where the command is supposed to be entered. And of course, I don't want to screw up the computer and make it worse.

I'm running Windows XP Service Pack 3; AMD Athlon 64 processor, 2.2 GHz, 448 MB RAM, HP vs15 flat panel monitor on NVIDIA GeForce 6150 LE.

Anything else you need to know to help me find a solution? I certainly appreciate your help, because I am more than fed up with Windoze. :hi:

1. Does your system meet the requirements for the version of Ubuntu you're trying?
I dunno but might guess you need more RAM: can you upgrade to something beyond 512MB? say, 1.0-1.5gb?

2. That's enough RAM for Ubuntu.
I've used Ubuntu Live on 384 Mb without any problem. Monitor going to sleep is a new one on me.

4. Gotta love the magical incantations that the Linux wizards have in their bags of tricks.

The computer hardware makers have to go through all sorts of procedures to make sure that their gear will work with m$ OS's,

Most everything also works with current Linus distros, since they read the hardware specs and install the needed drivers automagically. But, when not, there is usually some magic available. Reading some Linux help forums (odd hobby, but hey!), Those magic spells are beginning to read as a meaningful language.

(edit: it's always something)
