I need help with a frustrating computer issue, and I figure this might be the place to ask!

Okay, here's the deal. I'm a horrible dork who wants to be able to connect my Nintendo DS to WIFI for various purposes. Unfortunately, my DS can't connect to WIFI through my router because of its security settings.

In order to circumvent this problem, I purchased a Realtek 802.11 b/g/n Wireless USB Adapter. The idea being that once properly configured, I would be able to connect my DS to WIFI. The device was cheap, much cheaper than the Nintendo version. The bulk of customer reviews I read said that it worked with connecting the DS, but it was very difficult to accomplish.

With that in mind, I installed the software of Adapter, restarted my computer, and...nothing.

Nothing at all. I can plug the USB Adapter into my computer, and it'll make a sound acknowledging that I plugged something in, but on my system tray it says 'no realTEK 11n USB Wireless LAN'...as if I hadn't plugged anything at all into the computer. I have searched the internet high and low for a solution but have come up with nothing. I realize that many of you here are much more technically adept than I am, and might have a clue as to why my computer doesn't think this damn thing exists, and an idea to fix it.

Would simply tracking down the latest drivers help? I heard one possible solution was uninstalling and reinstalling the device until it finally starts working. I'm just not sure. Help!!!
