does anyone know how to disable The HID in XP pro SP1
I have a couple things going on that seem unconnected (task scheduling doesn't work, computer doesn't go on standby, doesn't come out of standby with the 'music').
Anyway both the scheduling and the standby problems, according to many sources on the internets can be traced to the Human Interface Device, and will go away, I am assured by M$ publications, if it is disabled. They give no instructions on how to do so.

I call Gateway. "I don't have anything on that. Try M$."

I call their Bangalore help desk and they say they can help me, if I am still under warranty. "I am. Here's my system ID." As soon as I say OEM (Gateway identifier) "oh we cannot help you with that miss unless you pay. You must contact Gateway" Thank you, M$.

I call Gateway back. A little service rep roulette. Still not picking a winner.

Anyway, I cannot FIND the HID on my box here. Anyone?

Thanks!

1. Right-click My Computer

Select Manage.
Expand Services.
Right-click HID Input Services.
Select Stop.
Right-click again.
Properties --> General --> Startup Type
Select Disabled.

Edit: Solution nicked from here ,BTW. I just tried it out to confirm if the options were there, since I have the same OS as you, XP Pro SP1.

2. Suweet!
It took me a moment, since Services is sort of hidden (Why make it easy. This way, I learn more anyway).

Thank you so very much. I am going to see if this fixes my problem!

I may have to reboot...

3. It worked for LiveUpdate
and I haven't left my computer alone long enough to see if it will consistantly go into standby on its own. It's been hit-and-miss. I can have programs running or not and it'll go into sb or not. And i don't get the music starting up from manual sb-but I HATE the music x(-I just use it as a symptom of something not quite right-but what do I expect? It IS Windows after all!!! :P
