Any Canidae dog food buyers here?
Edited on Fri Aug-15-08 12:04 AM by JoeIsOneOfUs
They kept the price steady (at my local independent pet store) for a long time which I appreciated. Then the price went up a bit a few months ago. Then last week I went in for the usual 40 lb. bag and it's now a 35 lb. bag. I also noticed a few slight differences on the label (feeding amounts and ingredients). I've used it with my dogs for 6 years with no problems, but now they're having tummy troubles. Is it just my dogs?

editing - they talk about it on their website but I'll have to wade through the details of the differences when I'm more awake.

1. I buy it.
And you're right ... the price went up just a little while ago and now the bag is smaller, for a double rip-off. The only reason I'm still buying it is that they send me a coupon for a free bag for every 5 we buy. We bought the last of our pet store's 40 lb. bags, so we haven't tried the new formula yet. Of course, since we know we'll be getting the new formula next time, we'll get it in time to mix it with the old for an easier transition. They've added "diversified carbohydrates" ... that might explain your problem. It used to contain only brown rice.

3. thanks - my dogs are still having trouble
soft stools, and my older guy is having problems with his anal sacs as a result. Sigh. I hope to write a letter to Canidae but I'm totally swamped with some other stuff in life right now.

2. You might want to look into Evo
It's grain free, and our dog does really well on it. The same company also makes Innova, which has brown rice in it, and a bit more of other carbs. We feed the Innova dry to one of the cats, and either Evo or Innova canned to the other cat. The cat on the canned food has IBS and that's the only non-prescription brand of food (aside from Tiki Cat, which is a treat) that doesn't make him sick.

4. thanks, I've heard good things about Evo and tried Innova a few years ago
When I was changing foods a few years ago (I had moved long-distance and couldn't buy my old brand) Innova was one I tried for a while and I'll probably try it next.

5. I've always fed my cats and dog Innova/Evo
It's price has gone up too. It's all going up.

You might try adding some turmeric (1/8 tsp. or so) to their food as well, which helps with
runny stools.

I just bought the dog food I posted about below called Life's Abundance and they love it.
So that might be another good alternative and about the same price.

Hope you work it out.
