My Dog's Brain

Bookcover Penguin Studio has recently released My Dog's Brain, by internationally acclaimed Vermont artist Stephen Huneck.

This charming tribute to Huneck's black Labrador Sally illustrates -- in a colorful series of woodcut prints -- the daily goings-on of a typical dog, a sort of "canine everyman."

Captured in each portrait is the essence of doghood -- a life blissfully concerned only with simple pleasures, like sneaking onto the couch for a nap, munching on socks, and going along for a ride in the car.

Unencumbered by the responsibilities we humans must tend to, Sally is the epitome of what we'd all like to be: self-indulgent, playful, and free.

One need not be a dog owner to appreciate the message that lies behind these full-color prints, best exhibited in the cover art: within Sally's brain there is a part devoted solely to giving love.

She has an inexhaustible capacity for selfless loyalty. Even though she indulges her temptations she is faithful to those who care for her. There is a lot to be learned from this dog.

Stephen Huneck is best known for his hand-carved furniture and sculpture, and more recently, his woodcut prints, which in 1994 served as a kind of therapy during his recovery from a rare and often fatal form of pneumonia.

His work has been exhibited in more than a dozen museums, including the Smithsonian Institution and the Museum of American Folk Art, as well as several private collections.

Among his many admirers are First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton, Diane Sawyer, and former General Motors chairman Robert Stemple.

Huneck and his unique pieces have appeared on The Evening News on NBC, CBS This Morning, and Homes Across America, and have been featured in numerous publications, including Art & Antiques Magazine, Country Living, Home & Garden, and Town & Country.

4. Not just saddened, stunned
I had not heard. My husband and I have visited his studio and my Beau's photo is hanging in the Dog Chapel. So tragic to lose this man who gave so much joy and beauty to others.
