They'll take care of us and we need to take care of them
We all know dogs are empathetic. If we're not feeling well, we can sense the dog sensing us. They seem to stay a little closer and seem more prone to the occasional extra lick.

Big is our hugger. She takes her big, long body and wraps it around us, literally, as she stands by our side. A hug, no doubt about it.

Little is our kisser. She loves nothing more than giving us affectionate licks whenever we're in mouth range of her.

Today a thunder storm went through. Little, our fearless Alpha, is afraid of thunder. She always has been. At the first hint of it in the distance, she's under a bed or behind the couch, or someplace safe. But where she *really* wants to be is under my desk while I'm working. When I find her in a makeshift den during a storm, she's literally trembling. But right now, as the storm rages, she's under my desk, her head is on my foot, and she's calm.

I love these dogs.

2. Your post brought tears to my eyes....
You are so right on the money about what dogs do and what they want.

They want so little and give so much.

My 'big'..my GSD, Boen was also terrified by thunder and lightning, as was my previous GSD, Sasha.

They both huddled in corners or under my desk....finding comfort in their "den".
One of my last pictures of Boen was of him hiding under my desk during a thunder storm...

I did purchase an "Anxiety Wrap" that seemed to help a bit..and administered Rescue Remedy..but nothing did the trick like being close to me...and being hugged and petted.

I still miss my boy very much.....

3. My cat does the same behaviors
including the sandpapery kisses, annoying as hell when I'm just starting to fall asleep and she decides to get affectionate with the tip of my nose.

She prefers to be right here at or on my feet when there's thunder. She wraps herself around my ankles when she's passing through.

She's always right there, looking worried, when I'm sick.

I often think cats and dogs give us far more than we give them.

4. They do, Warpy. They do. They give us unconditional love.
That means they give to us an expect nothing in return. Because of that, we owe them all we are capable of giving.

6. I had a very conservative friend. I mean nasty obnoxious conservative
but he and his wife loved me and treated me like gold.
He used to love animals. He treated the animals the best, not lavish care, but fully adequate, and he loved and cared for the animals so much, cats, dogs and horses.
He used to say "we have to take care of the animals because they cannot take care of themselves. People should be able to take care of themselves. But we must care for the animals."
But he helped many people, anonymously.
