Props to our own Celebration on a great cold prevention home remedy!
Edited on Sun Mar-06-11 10:51 AM by BlueIris
(Yes, I know no one says props anymore. So sue me.)

In my "two colds in two weeks" thread, Celebration suggested lime juice at the first sign of a cold had worked to help her with prevention. So, yesterday, a bunch of people in a grocery store hacked and wheezed on me. I snatched up a little bottle o' lime juice ($.98) and took a few swigs. No signs of sniffles today! (I would usually be symptomatic by now.)

So...yay, lime juice? Oh, and does anyone know why it works? Is it the antimicrobial qualities?

1. I say "props and "word" all the time, much to others' dismay
but I'm gonna keep doing it. ;)

Wow, that's interesting! I'm curious what others say, too.

We're doing a concoction of Airborne (lemon/lime) plus more vitamin C plus an herbal wellness liquid and, so far, we don't progress beyond the initial symptoms, even after traveling on planes where tons of people were hacking away. :(

2. It doesn't always work, but here is how
I think it works when it does. At least this is the idea behind it........

Lime juice of course is acidic. Nevertheless, once it gets in the body, it makes the body more alkaline, for some very established biological reason that has to do with basic chemistry that I read about but only retained for about ten minutes.

Many, many viruses (note I did not say all) flourish in acidic environments. Conversely, a balanced or slightly alkaline state can help with making it harder for a particular virus to take hold in the body.

So this all has to do with my experiments with pH strips and reading up on all this stuff. It is all ignored by most MDs, and they just say that the blood is kept in a very narrow pH range. Yes, that is true for as far as it goes. But, to keep the blood in this narrow range the body steals ions and stuff from the tissues. So, saliva and urine testing is the way to go. Saliva pH issues have to do with digestive issues. Urine pH has everything to do with diet.

There are tons of people who use lemon in water for pH issues. I just find that lime works a bit better plus I like it better.

I say props too.

Keep in mind that this works with particular organisms that flourish in acid environments. Some use all this to combat cancer, even. Again, though, some cancers are more sensitive to pH issues than others.

It could be that the EmergenC powders really work by this same mechanism. I need to test that stuff.

5. Hmmm. I haven't yet started learning about pH issues.
And I've been interested in trying the EmergenC and maybe the EsterC products, too.

10. disease can't survive in an alkaline environment
and flourishes in an acidic one. Of course, fav stuff like carbs and more carbs create that wonderful acidic environ for those little beasties. Hence the need to change the ph balance of our bodies.

I have been working on this for a few months now. I am happy to say, that after lots of work, I now crave veggie broth.

3. testimonials on lemon water from EarthClinic
http://www.earthclinic.com/Remedies/lemons.html

Some of them mention limes, and some of them mention the use of lemon water for preventing viruses.

I never really doubted it, but my personal experience with this one time was REALLY astounding, because I was definitely starting to get sick, but I drank the lime water within about an hour of getting symptoms, and one half hour later I was fine. Again, though, not all viruses would be so acid dependent.

A lot of the people here mention having lemon water every morning before breakfast. Now I do drink lime water several times a week.

4. Yay! Glad you're okay.

I will have to try this the next time I feel a cold coming on.

The two things I've found effective are:

1. Mixing 1/3 hydrogen peroxide and 2/3 water in a small cup, dipping q-tips in it to wipe each ear and then fresh q-tips for each nostril, then gargling with the rest of the mix.

2. Ginger tea.

8. I use 1/2 vinegar and 1/2 alcohol in ears
when I have it mixed up. That definitely prevents swimmer's ear, but some people say it helps them prevent colds.

6. Haven't tried Lime Juice this way,
But of course, it makes sense. I wonder if Lime juice is a more bioavailable form of Vit C over lemon or orange juice? Anyone know? I sometimes have lemon juice in hot water in the morning. I've heard it is good to have throughout the day as well. Probably jumpstarts the liver if used before breakfast, however, but I also recently read that by putting in a little baking soda into the mix, you are really alkalizing the body. I don't know how much, though.

7. I've heard that too
But I stay away from sodium when I can. No sense adding it here (for me). But sometimes I chew up calcium carbonate, which probably does about the same thing without the sodium.

The vitamin C may help, but I think it is pH balance. Things like EmergenC use a form of vitamin C that is alkaline (sodium ascorbate). I assume that has a bit of sodium in it too.

The calcium carbonate is really what Tums is, but Tums adds some stuff that isn't so good for you.

9. Regular table salt is not good.
but sea salt and especially Himalayan Salt is quite healthful. I use HS regularly. It is actually supposed to help alkalize, but has many other healthful properties.
