An invitation for tomorrow
We don't honor men who beat their children under the assumption that the beatings will "teach them to respect him." So why on earth should we honor men who kill other people under the assumption that peace can somehow magically spring from murder?

Instead, I invite everyone to dedicate the eleventh second of the eleventh minute of the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month of this eleventh year to the divine principles of Love, Consciousness and Compassion. For one magical moment, become That Which Thou Art.

Namaste,
Bodhi

3. I honor the men & women who put up their lives
to free the world from tyranny. If you think that the men who landed on the Normandy beaches are "murderers," then I've nothing to say to you.

6. Pacifism and self-sacrifice
Edited on Fri Nov-11-11 10:40 AM by GliderGuider
In the end we are all here to learn from our experiences, so I have no quarrel with your chosen path. I'm a radical pacifist who places personal values above cultural ones. Because of that I like to offer alternatives to "self-evident" cultural views if I can. Pacifism has an ancient and honourable history, as do love, self-sacrifice and self-realization. The life-tapestry we choose to weave from those threads is up to each of us.

Here's a reflection that seems appropriate for today, as it brings these threads together:

The word "sacrifice" comes from the Latin roots sacer which means "sacred", and facere which means "to make". So the term self-sacrifice means "to make oneself sacred". What roads do we travel to accomplish that personal apotheosis in our own lives?

7. The path you have chosen is your own
but had it been taken by others, my family included, during WWII, then many more innocent people would have died at the hands of the Axis Powers. Seeking war for war's sake is bad; fighting to defend your country & protect the lives & freedoms of others is not. And remembering those who fought under those conditions is in no way "glorifying" war or murder.
