Is it safe to put slug killer in one's composter?
I'm having a problem with slugs in my home composter. Naturally, the wee beasties think my composter is the next best thing to an all-you-can-eat and are thriving. I have an organic garden and am loathe to use chemicals, but I do have a product called Escar-Go! which is supposed to be safe to use around pets. Question is, is it safe enough to actually add to my composter? I have a lot of cool salamanders living around my composter; supposedly they eat slug eggs but there are just so damned many. I also don't want to harm the salmanders themselves.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

1. NJ Cher posted a great article-- as for slugs, here's what it says
What works: Diatomaceous earth repels slugs by tearing their bellies as they crawl over it. Iron phosphate also works. Beer traps sunk into the ground catch and drown slugs.

You can get Diatomaceous earth (aka DE) at any pool supply store, I use it in my pool filter and it's cheap and easy to work with

4. They have DE at Lowe's
Saw it the other day when I was looking for something to keep the chipmunks from digging up my pots.

2. Cheap beer.
Either put small bowls of it near the composter for them to drown in (they love beer) or open a six pack of schlitz, bud, or other cheap brand and pour directly on the compost. Beer's not bad for compost, but it's death to slugs.

5. Sluggo Slug and Snail Bait - Iron Sulfate - non-toxic
to animals and humans. I use it around Hostas and in the compost. It really works!
