What do you think of this planting combination? |
|
Our garden is growing nicely right now, kind of boring actually. We weed every day but at the moment all I'm waiting for is seeds planted a couple of days ago to emerge.
With this last planting I tried to see how many things I could get to coexist in my narrow rows. I started my planting by building four sets of quadrapods out of 8' long 2x2s bolted together through their tops. These are line up to act as self supporting trellis. At the base of each leg I have pole lima beans and cucumbers planted. Those should climb together with no trouble. At ground level, and planted directly under the centers of my supports is a single Okra plant. Okra grows tall and thin and I'm hoping there is enough sun under the hanging beans to take care of them. Meanwhile down at ground level again, I have planted cantaloupe surrounding the Okra. So its melons for ground cover, Okra rising above it, and beans and Cukes festooned over top of it all. One area, 4 crops.

2. I await news of how well this works. |

I plant cukes at the edge of raised beds and trellis them on ladders planted outside of the bed. This keeps them from shading out the other plants. The ladders are my own construction with 1 x 4s and strap hinges. Each is about 4 ft tall and by mid-summer the cukes are cascading over both sides. Our melons are planted on a slope because we found that they do well with the natural cascading downhill.
Is okra thirsty? Never thought to plant some but your idea sounds like a good way to find space for it.
