How do you get new tomato plants from cuttings? |
I tried sticking cuttings in some topsiol in planters, and most of them didn't take. One is just sitting.

1. You may want to put the cuttings |
in a vase of water. Then you can see when (if) they produce roots. I've been somewhat successful with this method. I usually give the water a little bit of miracle grow.

2. Rooting hormone might help |
And usually propagation is done in perlite, not topsoil.

5. Fertilized topsoil is likely to have hormones in them that interfere with cuttings' growth |
That is what I read about garden center topsoils like Miracle-gro.

6. This was just straight topsoil |
I stay away from things like Miracle-Gro, for just that reason.

Funny, I came here just now to post the same question you just asked.

8. Interestingly enough, 1 of the 3 seemed to make it |
So if you want to be lazy and take all your cuttings and stick them in dirt, so that maybe a few transplantable ones will come out, that might work.

Rootone is one brand name. The water rooting method should work, too.

11. Rootone and lots of water |
Stick the cut end into Rootone and then stick it in the dirt, keep it real damp for a week or so. Usually works. Sometimes I just take suckers I pull off and stick them in the dirt - quite a few of them take.
