Jeez where do you draw the line? |
|
I really think someone on DU is going to kill (or seriously endanger) their child. They posted about getting their child chelation therapy cause you know of the government coverup. I just pointed out its dangerous but I wish there was more I could do! Its maybe not my place but it scares me to hear about someone doing this dumb shit! What do you think?:o

1. I don't think there is a line. |
|
If it's a dangerous thing to do, they ought to be warned.

2. Just post a link and move on |
|
Chances are that you won't be telling them anything that they haven't already heard and rejected. Their mind is made up. It's right to warn them, just in case, but it's likely that posting the facts will only benefit uncommitted third parties (which is useful in itself). I think it's probably not productive to be drawn into an argument in that kind of thread. When everyone else is offering prayers and "good energy" and advice about Reiki, being labelled a heartless skeptic probably won't achieve much.

3. Did you give them a link to the story |
|
about the kids who have died from chelation therapy?
They need to make an informed decision. I didn't post because they sounded like people who have their backs to the wall and will literally try anything to help a severely handicapped kid with little quality of life and that standard care hadn't worked.
We just have to hope that when they're doctor shopping to find someone willing to try it, they'll be informed of the very real risks to the child's life.

I didn't come out and say that she's going to kill the child, but I pointed out yet again that chelation has never been shown to do anything for autism. I also mentioned that heavy metals haven't been shown to cause autism, either.
That was about four hours ago, and it was the last post in the thread. I'm a little surprised that no one has replied to condemn me for my evil scientistic worldview and my lack of compassion.

7. I replied again, and you're right that it's sad |
|
Desperation moves people in unpredictable ways, and I confess that when I vaccinated my older son I felt a twinge of anxiety, even though I knew that the vaccines contained no Thimerosal and that, even if they did, it has nothing to do with autism.
Still, my anxiety was real, no matter how ill-founded.
Her statement that she's a nurse and has had more training than I have had is likely true but certainly irrelevant. She's making her decision from a position of quite understandable desperation, in essence putting all of her eggs in that one basket, and she doesn't want to consider that others may not reach the same conclusion that she has reached.
It's a sad tale regardless of her profession or training.

Now she is admitting that the "miracle cure" is only a miracle in 1% of the cases! But of course YOU don't know what you are talking about...YOU must be thinking of some OTHER chelation. She's so done with you ORRIX.... A;-) At least there is another sensible person in that thread.

I really fear for this child, and here's why: then chelation doesn't work (and it won't), what radical course of treatment are they going to pursue next? Colon cleansing? Blood-letting? Exorcism?
I respect the desperate situation in which this family finds itself, and I mentioned above my understanding of the anxiety resulting from these very issues. But I really worry that their situation is driving them to make decisions based on desperation rather than fact.

11. I wonder if she's using the word "nurse" in a non-literal way? |
|
She uses other titles for herself and her husband, and I don't get the idea that she's really a NURSE, rather, she's taking the role of nurse (I wish she wouldn't malign my profession either way, though.)
I feel badly for her and her family, but I feel worse for her poor child. Gah. To have idiots as parents

Shame that so much valuable education has gone down the toilet in favour of crackpot poison theories.
Shame shame.

A 5 year old dying from cardiac arrest is no joke. Hopefully her kid's "Dr." isn't so careless and at least does no harm.

I hope the kid does OK.
I assume that after he starts to improve in the next 2-3 years it will be because of the chelation therapy, not just the natural course of his diagnosis.

I didn't post because that individual seemed incredibly hostile, and I didn't feel the need to get sucked into another flamewar. Suffice it to say, she knows that chelation works...though she's not able to produce any data to support her conclusion. Whenever I see that, I'm very cautious as someone who knows that X works despite there not being any data to support them, is going to know that it works until the end of time.
