Is the PS3 worth purchasing?
My gf and I discussed it briefly the other day. We thought we might want one in case we ever get an HDTV, and some of the games look fun, but it's pretty pricey.

I guess I'm looking for the opinion of people who have bought it...do you like it? How long do you think it will last? Any opinions are welcome.

1. I have one and I really like it.
It has advantages and disadvantages though.

On the plus side, when you buy one you automatically get a BluRay player, so you will be able to watch movies in incredible detail. Also, some of the exclusive games for it are really neat, like Little Big Planet and Hot Shots Golf.

On the minus side, the XBox Live service seems to be miles ahead of the PlayStation online service in terms of providing original games and downloadable content (DLC) for existing games. One example of a game which has more playability on the XBox 360 would be the RPG Fallout 3. There is extra content available only for the XBox 360.

All-in-all I'd say base your decision on the games you want to play rather than the initial cost of the system.

2. I got mine about six months ago
I got up one Saturday morning and Target was running a one day sale ad, included in the sale was the 80 gig PS3 for... cheap (I forget how much it was but cheap for then), so I went and snatched one up :)

I have not gotten a lot of games but I really love what I do have.

NHL09 - Love the controls, good AI and two player (same screen). I have not tried the online but heard there are exploits that screw up the online experience.
GTA4 - Feels a lot smaller then San Adreas but I think its a much better story and better missions. Online I find kind of hard but it is a blast to play.
Fallout 3 - Simply awesome. I just wish I could get the expanded content, PC and XBOX owners get the goods but your left out in the cold with PS3, still a great game though.
Call of Duty:Modern Warfare - I skipped the single player completely and went straight to online. Wildly addictive, lots of different modes, stats, upgradeable weapons and perks, good maps. I'm not really big on FPS but I love this game.

The DVD/Blu ray playback is wicked smooth. I was never impressed with the PS2 as a DVD player but the PS3 is great for it.

Overall, I'm real happy with it.

3. If you want Blue Ray it's a no brainer imo. The movies are amazing in HD.
Also imo perhaps the all time greatest game ever made, Metal Gear Solid 4, at least technically. There is so much more for the 360, but if you are going to get Blue Ray, the Playstation 3 really only comes out to 100 bucks over the cost of the player.

4. Yes, it is the best console I have ever owned.
The Blu Ray playback is great, and there are lots of great games. For a while the 360 had better exclusives, but that has now changed and in my opinion the PS3 has the best games now and the list of new titles for 2009 is undoubtedly the best of any console.

Metal Gear Solid 4, Resistance 2, Little Big Planet, Killzone 2, and Valkyria Chronicles are all standout titles and with Infamous, God of War 3, and the next Ratchet and Clank game due out this year the library is going to get even better.

5. I bought one little over a year ago for my Husband
It died on us about a month ago. If we want to get it fixed we have to shell out 150.00 dollars to Sony.

I already owned an XBox 360 and loved it. My husband decided he wanted an XBox 360 and we basically dumped the PS3.

Everyone worries about XBox's red ring of death but at least they have a decent warranty policy.
