Diablo III News
"As the Diablo III beta nears, Blizzard announced its anticipated action-role-playing game will require you to be online at all times to play. The characters you can create in Diablo III, up to a limit of 10, will be stored on Blizzard's servers, and therefore require a constant internet connection to access. This applies to all modes of the game, from co-op to player-versus-player to solo play.

According to Rob Pardo, executive producer of Diablo III, this was done mainly to combat the style of hacking present in previous versions of Diablo. "In both Diablo and especially in Diablo II, I think the intuition for a lot of people when they're playing the game is 'I want to make my character offline away from that scary battle net environment. And then once I have this powerful character, I'll jump online.' But the problem with that concept is we can't really detect if they're cheating. They might have the capability to hack their character, things like that, so at that point we can't really allow that character to be in the battle net environment. Then they're going to have to restart their character, which is exactly what happened in Diablo II, which was really unfortunate.""

What a bunch of horseshit. They are once again making the same mistake they made with Diablo II and trying to portray Battlenet as a safe environment where there will be no hacked characters. It is just throwing down a challenge and about the stupidest thing they could be doing.

As much as I want D3, having to have a constant connection to Battlenet in order to even play single player is going to make me really consider if I get this game or not.

1. Well, having played D1 and then DII from December of 2001
along with my roommate and beautiful daughter until Guild Wars came out in 2005 (I was an Alpha/Beta tester in 2004), there is nothing I am looking forward to more than DIII. And since I have Steam, I have no problem simply blocking Battle Net from starting when I am not playing......oh, and from 2001-2005 with FOUR separate accounts, I was never hacked, never hassled, bought and sold hundreds of dollars of items on Ebay, and loved every second of the game until the promise of a better game (Guild Wars) which I still occasionally paly, became available. Then my accounts became dust.

I cannot wait......

2. I'm not sure it is a question of blocking it
I think it needs a continuous connection to battlenet or it will not play. Their version of security to make sure one does not play a pirate version... not that it will stop anyone or do anything more then annoy legit users.

Sigh... They never seem to learn.

4. hah! Wait till you see the guides I put out :D
Back in the day, I had the very first magic find barbarian guide on Diabloii.net. I'll be putting all of my character guides for D3 here though (well... probably on DU3, heh, depends on which comes out first).
