Jean Paul Gaultier's Fall 2009 Fashion Show inspired by Classic Film Stars-warning picture heavy
I thought Gaultier's Fall 2009 show was so imaginative and beautiful- His inspiration was movies and movie stars of Classic Films! He made dresses that were evocative of certain stars. The best part was the ending of his show: the 'Bride' came out with blinding lights on her veil/face. Projected onto the veil were actual black and white pictures of Bette Davis, Claudette Colbert, Jean Harlow, Clara Bow, etc., and as each picture was centered on the veil over the model's face, that image would float off onto a very large screen lit with stars, and a new star's face would move onto her veil. It was mesmerizing. Here are some of the pictures of the clothes from that show; unfortunately, the bride's outfit doesn't show the projected faces, but you can imagine. Notice how he incorporates film, and actual film into the clothes....

Jean Harlow:

Marilyn Monroe:

Brigitte Bardot:

Film Dress2:

The Bride (notice her stockings):

1. I just finished watching Project Runway.
It's my reality show guilty pleasure.

I generally don't like haute couture -- it's not designed for real women who lead real lives in the real world. But this is one of the more accessible collections that I have seen in a long time.

The stars of the '30s and '40s and '50s were glamorous, but their costumes were supposed to be ordinary clothing, just a little old rag that a shopgirl would wear, if the shopgirl had her clothes designed by Adrian or Edith Head or Walter Plunkett. Those clothes were not that different from what you would find in a store, but made of wonderful fabrics and perfectly fit.

Thanks for adding this to the Classic Films Group.
