TCM Schedule for Friday, August 26 -- Summer Under The Stars -- Peter Lawford
Edited on Wed Aug-24-11 10:13 PM by Staph
Today's star is Peter Sydney Ernest Aylen (his parents were married to others at the time of his birth -- they married a year later). In his 20s, he worked at a country club. A prestigious member of the club once complained to the management that Lawford was eating lunch and fraternizing with the black employees, and that he should be fired. This member was Joseph P. Kennedy, who years later became his father-in-law! Enjoy!

The beloved collie goes to war to help the resistance in occupied Norway.
Dir: S. Sylvan Simon
Cast: Peter Lawford, Donald Crisp, June Lockhart.
C-100 min, TV-G, CC

This film was the first filmed in the Technicolor "monopack" process, where one magazine of film registered all three primary colors, rather than the original three-strip Technicolor process (introduced in 1932), where a separate magazine of film had to be exposed (and processed) for each of the three primary colors.

In the version presently shown on TCM, this short is not identified on-screen as part of any particular series. However, in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science's (AMPAS) on-line database, as well as its set of looseleaf pages listing all nominees and winners, and in "Box Office" magazine, this short is identified as an entry in Warner Bros.' "Vitaphone Varieties" series.

After being unjustly accused of spying, a British officer tries to redeem himself in India.
Dir: Allan Davis
Cast: Peter Lawford, Richard Greene, Janice Rule.

IMDB says that this was filmed in the Khyber Pass in Afghanistan. Somehow I doubt that.

C-108 min, TV-G, CC

Cyd Charisse completed the bulk of this film (most impressively in two romantic dance duets with Ricardo Montalban), then broke her leg during the filming of the big ceremonial dance, where the corps de ballet is in island native makeup. A double completed her scenes (shot at full length), but the injury kept her out of her next scheduled film, Easter Parade. That role, which would've advanced her to fourth billing, went to Ann Miller, making her MGM debut.

A returning GI and his friends try to make it in the music business.
Dir: Richard Whorf
Cast: Frank Sinatra, Kathryn Grayson, Peter Lawford.
103 min, TV-G, CC

Throughout Frank Sinatra's early career much was made of the fact that he was very skinny. They make a little fun of his weight in this movie. During the song "I Believe" in the gym Frank walks up a teeter-totter and, when he reaches the high end, it remains up until 'Jimmy Durante' tosses him a baseball. When he catches the baseball the high end descends, implying that the baseball weighed more than Frank.

This story was conceived when Garson Kanin, trying to cheer up his wife Ruth Gordon, was driving by Columbus Circle.
