1. Lorraine Bracco is a surprise.

Is Robert Osborne on hiatus? I know he's had some health problems, lately.

Nothing against Lorraine Bracco, though. I guess it makes a change to play the Hostess of Horror.

2. Looking at this selection,
which mirrors the kind of thing shown here when the 13th falls on a Friday, I can't help reflecting that the scariest films for me are those in which you see little or nothing of the ghosts/ghouls.

I remember the first time I saw "The Uninvited" with Ray Milland and Gail Russell - I swear there were moments when I didn't breathe. Once you've seen it through, it's never quite so scary again, but I can still watch it with great admiration for its direction and acting. But no unearthly howls, no apparitions - your imagination did all the work.

I also thought "The Innocents", although not classified as classic horrror, was one of the scariest films I've ever seen (I refer to the Deborah Kerr version). Just a flicker of movement here and there, until the "ghost" appears towards the end - I recall people shrieking in the theatre when he appeared on screen. And yet you could never be sure it wasn't all in the governess's mind, which is how it was meant to be. I think the black and white photography was a definite asset, and I think there's a case for all horror films to be shot in black and white ("Psycho" in colour? Hitchcock would spin in his grave at the thought).

Filmmakers shouldn't underestimate the power of the imagination of the audience.
