TCM Schedule for Friday, October 28 -- What's On Tonight: Evil Twins

Happy birthday to Edith Head, born Edith Claire Posener, on October 28, 1897 in San Bernardino, California, the most honored costume designer in Hollywood, with 35 nominations and 8 wins. Her trademark "sunglasses" were not "sunglasses" but rather blue lensed glasses. Looking through a blue glass was a common trick of costumers in the days of Black and White film to get a sense of how a color would photograph. Edith had a pair of glasses made out of the proper shade of blue glass to save herself from looking through a single lens. Her friends commonly would see her in regular "clear" glasses. All of the daytime feature films were costumed, at least in part, by Edith Head.

And just in time for Halloween, in primetime, TCM is chilling with evil twins. Enjoy!

Won an Oscar for Best Music, Original Song -- Jimmy Van Heusen (music) and Sammy Cahn (lyrics) for the song "High Hopes"

The original Broadway production of "A Hole in the Head" by Arnold Schulman opened at the Plymouth Theater on February 28, 1957, ran for 156 performances and closed July 13, 1957. The cast included Paul Douglas, David Burns, Lee Grant, Kay Medford and Joyce Van Patten.

A classic car changes the lives of three sets of owners.

Cast: Rex Harrison, Jeanne Moreau, Edmund Purdom.

The Rolls-Royce used in the film was a pale blue 1930 Phantom II Sedanca de Ville, which M-G-M technicians covered with 20 coats of yellow paint; a few coats of black were added to the top of the hood, the roof, and the wings.

This short documentary follows the story of the antique Rolls that appeared in the title role of MGM's "The Yellow Rolls Royce" (1964).

Nominated for Oscars for Best Actress in a Supporting Role -- Ruth Gordon, Best Art Direction-Set Decoration, Color -- Robert Clatworthy and George James Hopkins, and Best Costume Design, Color -- Edith Head and Bill Thomas

This is an interesting movie for film buffs since many scenes feature shots in various areas and departments of Warner Bros. Studios, in Burbank, California. The actual studio appeared as the mythical "Swann Studios" in the film.

Nazis kidnap a key American intelligence officer and try to convince him that World War II is over.

Based on the story Beware Of The Dog, by Roald Dahl. Your mileage may vary, but I find this story and film fascinating!

Mercenaries salvage a sunken submarine to rob the Queen Mary at sea.

The Coast Guard cutter featured in the film displays the prototype of the modern racing stripe now used on all cutters. It was designed by Raymond Loewy/William Snaith and the final version was adopted service-wide 6 April 1967.

A New Orleans hotel owner fights off a corporate raider while his guests struggle through a variety of personal problems.

Cast: Rod Taylor, Catherine Spaak, Karl Malden.

In an odd twist of fate that could not be appreciated for at a decade, Karl Malden plays a hotel thief who breaks into guest rooms and steals wallets; following one lowly heist that nets him him only a few dollars in actual cash, he bemoans that his livelihood is being snuffed out by rampant popularity of credit cards - which ironically later became his real-life late-career claim to fame as spokesman for American Express credit cards: "Don't leave home without it!"

The original script was written in 1944 and sat on the shelf at Warner Brothers until 1963 when at long last it was finally in production.

An evil twin brother disposes of his enemies in a secret death chamber on his estate.

At the early stages of production, author-producer Tom Tryon wanted Ingrid Bergman for the role of Ada (the Grandmother), and Mark Lester for the dual roles of Niles and Holland. When Bergman passed, on account of a previous stage commitment, Uta Hagen was hired and brought aboard twins Chris Udvarnoky and Martin Udvarnoky.

According to the commentary by John Hurt on the DVD, real-life retired executioner Albert Pierrepoint was a technical advisor for the execution scene. This scene was the first British people had seen in a cinema of a British hanging, and as it was still covered under the government's Official Secrets Act, no details regarding the scene were available. This is where Albert Pierrepoint came in, under an assumed name, and was able to re-create the harrowing scene to maximize the true terror of what it must have been like.
