1. Cagney as Cohan.

One 4th of July many years ago, as my father and I sat watching Yankee Doodle Dandy on TCM, my he mentioned that his long-deceased mother had found James Cagney's performance as Cohan on the mark. I mention that because my grandmother, herself an actress, would have seen Cohan perform back in the day (In fact, she was in the touring company of play performed in D.C. the same week Cohan was there, if I'm not mistaken).

I've no doubt told that story every year I've been on DU, but today it got me thinking about contemporary reviews of Cagney's performance, the degree of authenticity in the production, etc., and I found Googlebooks had some very interesting resources in that regard.
