1. Half-Price Books! (and other Dallas places)
A great chain that was started in Dallas and has now gone to several other states. The original owner's daughter, Boots, is very cool, and the merchandise selection cannot be beat!

Some other good Dallas spots:

The Old Monk Pub
Cafe Lago (Garland Road)
FunAsia Entertainment Complex (Plano Rd @ Beltline)
Crossroads Market & Bookstore (gay-oriented, but that's not all they have; nice cafe too)
Whole Foods
Premiere Video on Mockingbird
Inwood Theater
Kathleen's Art Cafe
Redenta's Garden (as opposed to Home Depot) for plants!
CD World (Mockingbird @ Greenville)

37. Well, their CEO is a libertarian who won't allow unions
I think a couple of stores managed to get unions in, but he's busted others. The store in the Lakeview neighborhood in Chicago has prohibited staff from having visible piercings other than ear, and having hair color that could not occur naturally, which I think is utter corporate bullshit.

The thing about boycotts is...there's no corporation that wears an untarnished halo. You have to do a cost-benefit analysis and decide whether the corporation is doing more harm than good. WF is at least providing organic and natural options in urban areas; I find Trader Joe's is a more ethical corporation at this time, although it could always change.

17. Titian, you have no star and I need more information
All I got from your website was the following information:

ABOUT VERIUNI

VERIUNI, a product line comprised of nutritional, cleaning, personal care, pet care, telecommunication products, and more, is the consumer product division of Carson Services, Inc., headquartered in Lincoln, Nebraska, USA.

Founded in 1985, Carson Services, Inc. is a long-time member of the Better Business Bureau serving Southern Nebraska, as well as a member of the Lincoln Chamber of Commerce.

The exclusive marketing arm of VERIUNI is the SFI Marketing Group (also a division of Carson Services, Inc.). Today, with millions of registered affiliates in over 190 countries, The SFI Marketing Group is believed to be the largest affiliate program in the world.

<snip>

Can you help us? Where can we find more specifics, like political contributions, company size, etc?

I'm not trying to be confrontational, but I don't want to see our group becoming a target for anyone who wants some free advertising.

And that means...???

FWIW, couldn't find any indication of any progressive/liberal activities by this business. Neither Gery Carson nor Weimer show up at all in a 2000-2004 check of opensecrets.org .

Would assume that the referenced post above was just another MLMer's attempt to drum up some leads.

28. Socially Responsible organizations
Edited on Tue Nov-16-04 06:17 PM by Titian
It seems to me progressive business organizations in America is quite new.

I did a goggle search on socially responsible organizations and what came
up as number 1 on goggle was from http://www.global-equality.org/action/soc_business.shtml which is the National Association of Socially Responsible Organizations and I clicked a few links such as United Northeast Natural Foods & Organic Produce and Boulder Co-op Market and I get error messages.

As a buyer of organic products in NYC I am not a happy consumer. I just briefly reviewed from this list and none seem to have a 30 day money back guarantee like my home business which has a 30 day refund policy on all the products and services sold from my store located at http://www.americansupermart.com

If the products on this list are so much better then mine at my store why can't they just offer a 30 day money back guarantee?

Socially Responsible Business links

_______________________________________________

I just stated my home business a few months ago. I as well have not seen them listed in any left wing groups such as opensecrets.org.

They have a discussion forum that is free to join. Others that have been affiliates for SFI longer then me perhaps might know. http://www.sfidboard.com/ It is free join at http://netvillagemall.com

My own opinion of why SFI (Veriuni) is not listed in opensecrets.org is that progressives have not really ever had a Progressive v. Republican business website before.

I can tell you what my political contributions were as an affiliate of SFI. I contributed to the Dems in 2000 and to DFA (Democracy for America) http://www.democracyforamerica.com / just a few days ago.

4. Co-op America's Green Pages
Edited on Mon Nov-15-04 01:25 PM by kayell
http://www.greenpages.org/

"To be listed in the Green Pages OnlineTM, or in special versions of the directory — like our Vermont edition, the Green Mountain Green PagesTM — businesses submit an application, or are pre-qualified by Co-op America's Screening Team. The Screening Team, which is appointed by and reports to Co-op America's board of directors, investigates each applying company to determine: 1) its familiarity with and commitment to social and environmental responsibility, and 2) significant action in terms of this commitment. Our research team also seeks independent data to verify company information.

Specifically, to be qualified to be listed in the Green PagesTM, companies must demonstrate that they:

* Focus on using business as a tool for positive social change.
* Are "values-driven," as well as profit-driven.
* Are socially and environmentally responsible in the way they source, manufacture, and market their products and run their offices and factories.
* Are committed to and employ extraordinary and innovative practices that benefit: 1) workers, 2) communities, 3) customers, and 4) the environment. "

15. For travel: Use Amtrak.
In most cases, for regional trips, you'll get there in an effectively equivalent amount of time to driving, and only slightly effectively longer than flying, and it's cheaper.

How can that be when the trip takes 13 hours compared to 3 on the plane?

Because you have an extra 2 hours at the airport, an hour in most cities getting to the airport, and an hour after you get off the plane getting your bags and car and stuff. So your 3 hour flight really takes you 6-7 hours. And since trains tend to run at night, you can do the overnight thing and arrive at your destination rested - the seats in trains are far more comfy than anything on a plane - and ready to get to business.

Amtrak is a federal program that keeps losing funding. Every other first world nation has an effective passenger rail system. We must keep ours alive.

25. Keep it simple
Trying to remember long lists of companies to boycott or support is a little too complicated for me. Especially since I live in a conservative city where even the locally-owned businesses are likely to be Republican donors or supporters.

Are there some general guidelines one can follow instead of trying to target specific companies?

27. I know. It's hard for me, too.
I live in a town of ~20,000 population and places like Walmart, Home Depot, Taco Bell have run others out of business. KMart is gone, KFC and Wendy's pulled out, which is okay. But we have a limited selection around here. Even locally-owned restaurants and businesses are scarce. I've made an effort to avoid Walmart as much as possible and instead I try to shop at in-state owned businesses like Marsh, Martin's supermarkets and drug stores like Walgreen's. If I can't buy from local retailers for something I want, I at least try in-state owned businesses. Sadly, most of the business is owned by Republicans in this town, too. So it doesn't make much difference.

</sarcasm> Now that I have your attention, could we stop automatically boycotting corporations that have unsuccessfully fought unions? The unions have triumphed, for the most part at Borders, and B&N employees are still struggling. If we boycott a company simply because they fought unions (and lost), then we as consumers may be helping to kill a nascent retail union movement. Buy at unionized stores, and send them letters telling them *why* you do!

43. For Twin Cities people:
Peace Coffee: not only is it fair trade, organic, and shade grown, but it is delivered to stores by bicycle. To top it off, it has a rich flavor.

We don't have Trader Joe's (yet), but we do have several membership co-op grocery stores that carry all the necessities and concentrate on organic, earth-friendly, locally-produced (if possible) products.

This company seems like a good bet for buying all kinds of outdoor recreational products and clothing.

50. Lol! Actually, an Oberon purse inspired the name
I was coming up with nothing suitable for my unusual looking kitten when I looked down at the buckle on my Oberon purse strap during lunch one day. The company name was carved into the buckle, and I thought "yeah, I love Shakespeare, and it's unusual enough that no other cats will have the same name when he goes to the vet"! Naturally, the next kitten HAD to be named Puck!

That Oberon purse was given to me six years ago, and it still looks like new. I used to replace them every year or two, but no more! Blue companies make the best stuff! ;-)

One of my FAVORITE new magazines. (Well, they're not new, but they're new to me-- I discovered them last summer).

Wonderful progressive news stories, and ads for many products you might not hear about unless you read them.

Here's a great link to their site. You can subscribe here, get hold of back issues, and participate in their forum.

I just discovered them last week. Both organic and fair trade. Makes the best cup of joe I've ever had--not acidy at all. They've apparently been around for a while but I was unaware of them. You can buy online. They are carried at one of the supermarkets in a nearby town in our area. You can buy in bulk too.
