Edwards campaigns for Shuler for House
HENDERSONVILLE - In terms of ideology, Heath Shuler and John Edwards are a football field apart.

But Tuesday the pair of Democrats shared the same sideline against a common foe when Edwards rallied with Shuler, the former NFL and University of Tennessee quarterback taking aim at Republican Rep. Charles Taylor.

They used the appearance to discuss their shared belief in better social programs, specifically a low-income housing development in the 11th District.

"We have the same core belief system," Edwards said. "He's exactly the type of man Western North Carolina needs. We need change -- change for the better."

Asheville Citizen-Times: Shuler by his side, Edwards blasts Bush

HENDERSONVILLE — The message was simple: It’s time for political change, and the Democratic Party has the candidates.

Braving a steady rain, more than 300 people seemed energized by that message Tuesday afternoon during a joint appearance by congressional candidate Heath Shuler and John Edwards, former U.S. senator and vice presidential candidate and a possible presidential candidate. The Democratic Party of Henderson County hosted the event.

Shuler, who faces incumbent Rep. Charles Taylor, R-Brevard, in the November election, praised the accomplishments of the three organizations benefiting from the hot dog lunch fundraiser — Habitat for Humanity, the Housing Assistance Corp. and the Mainstay women’s shelter.

“There’s nothing more fulfilling than when you get that first opportunity to see a mom, dad and children embrace in a new home they can call their own,” Shuler said. He also touted his plan for a $1,500 tax credit for new homeowners.
