For Colored Girls Who Have Conisdered Suicide When the Rainbow is Not Enuf
I read this as a pre-teen and it followed me through life. I'm surprise - I'm not sure if it is pleasantly so - that Tyler Perry is producing it. Here's what he said...

"Making a film of 'For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When The Rainbow is Enuf' is a dream come true for me. Ntozake Shange's play is a magnificent tribute to the strength and dignity of women of color, and I think audiences of all generations will be able to recognize and embrace the experiences these women represent. Creatively, this movie is one of the most exciting undertakings of my career."http://www.bvonmovies.com/2010/03/23/tyler-perry-for-colored-girls-casting/

Here's what Ntozake Shange had to say about the genesis of the play...

"The rainbow: Ntozake Shange (suffering from depression) saw a huge rainbow over the city of Oakland, California, and realized that she and other women had a right to survive, because, as she related in a New York Times interview, they 'have as much and as much purpose for being here as mountains do.' In that same interview, Shange explained that she realized that the rainbow is 'the possibility to start all over again with the power and beauty of ourselves; The rainbow is a fabulous symbol for me. If you see one color, it’s not beautiful. If you see them all, it is. A colored girl, by my definition, is a girl of many colors. But she can only see her overall beauty if she can see all the colors of herself. To do that, she has to look deep inside her. And when she looks inside herself, she will find love and beauty.'"

I'm looking forward to seeing it!

...(play) i'm *so* appreciative of the work...but i did not dig the trailer i viewed recently at the movies, for this upcoming film. not. at. all.

i'm not even a little happy, that tyler perry is attached to this.
if what i saw was any indication (and i *sincerely* hope it is not)...i won't be seeing this. i don't want to be any madder at him for all the years he's taken black women back, with his form of entertainment, than i already am. and yeah, i'm pretty pissed.

don't get me wrong. i appreciate that he keeps sisters working.
but i'm sincerely annoyed that old boy seems to only have two registers of emotion for black women--grief and rage. not just grief--but profound, gut wrenching, severe torrential downpours, kind of sadness. :eyes: ...and snatching off earrings, setting fire to shit, kind of rage.

yeah--thanks for endorsing every hideous stereotype that exists of women of color, mr. perry. you can stuff all of that...i'm not having it.

sadly, for all my disgust--i know black women will go out in droves to see it, or else he wouldn't be able to keep making movies...
--heavy depressed sigh---

3. I don't get you wrong at all because
I've Never seen Any of Perry's films - just didn't like the trailers at all. Haven't even seen a trailer for this one, come to think of it - just read of it online.

I'm just hoping that since this isn't from his Imaginarium and the book/play is all laid out already and always well-received otherwise, that it might work. Keeping my fingers crossed.

4. if you're interested...
...enter the movie in your search engine, and you can see the trailer for this. it's actually better than most of his film trailers. i try to just take pleasure in seeing so many black women on the screen together.

:hi: if you check it out, let me know what you think. you're right, if he's true to the book/play, the content may rise above his usual work. i'll be hopeful for your sake. lol.

5. Started seeing trailers on teevee yesterday.
:hi: Bliss, the scenes looked really thoughtful and the voice-over reviews were glowing, like "Perry's Best Work EVER!" I was like Oh My, maybe he did okay this time. But I'm going to wait to hear reviews from real people who saw it though. Though I want to see it, I just don't trust Perry with my sensibilities.

6. Glad you liked the trailer...
...and I'm going to be hopeful, that it isn't "his usual gig" and something you can enjoy, Kind of Blue. I know I won't see it--but appreciate that you will. Nice to see others support sisters work, you know?

:hi:
