Historic election brings a first for Alabama

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - Alabama's congressional districts will look a lot different this term. For the first time, Alabamians have voted to send two women to Congress.

There's Martha Roby of the Alabama's Second Congressional District and Terri Sewell. Sewell will represent Alabama's Seventh Congressional District. Sewell will also be Alabama's first African-American Congresswoman. But she stresses this win is not about her, but rather those who pave the way for her to get the post and those she endeavors to help. And she knows that will be challenging, as she will face a Republican controlled congress and she will be the sole Democrat in Alabama's congressional district.

"I think focusing on our common interests to bring about economic development for all, and I think that's something both sides of the aisles can agree on," Sewell says.

Her top three issues are creating jobs, improving education, and helping to ensure quality healthcare for those she represents.
