A Camp Lejeune Marine accused of beating a noncommissioned officer to death last month has been formally charged.

Pvt. Jonathan Law, 21, of Clark County, Nev., has been charged with murder and burglary, according to a 2nd Marine Logistics Group spokesman.

Law has been in the base brig since Nov. 7, when he was arrested in connection with the murder of Cpl. Joshua E. Hartzell, 22, of Hamilton, Ohio.

Hartzell, an electro-optical ordnance repairer with 2nd Maintenance Battalion, died from blunt-force trauma to the head, according to a Marine Corps news release. His body was found early Nov. 6 in the woods across the street from the French Creek barracks after someone called the provost marshal’s office to report a disturbance in that area, according to Capt. Timothy Patrick, a 2nd Marine Logistics Group spokesman.

Law, a supply administration clerk with 2nd Supply Battalion, was at the scene suffering from self-inflicted wounds, according to base officials. He was airlifted to a regional hospital about 50 miles from the base. The following day, he was arrested and moved to the brig.
