Free ride denied to disabled vets in North Texas
WYLIE — As a disabled veteran, Jeff Gudgeon feels he has paid enough. He says spending money on highway tolls is a cost he shouldn’t have to pay.

“It kind of gets to you,” Gudgeon said.

Thousands of disabled veterans in Texas get to drive toll roads for free — but not in North Texas.

In September, the Texas Legislature passed a law giving toll road operators the choice to waive fees to disabled vets.

Three months later, Houston’s major toll road operator, Harris County Toll Road Authority, adopted the idea.

1. As long as Jeff Gudgeon is still breathing, he can pay. (CAUTION GRAPHIC PIX)
Stories like this just make me nuts.

The veteran has put himself at risk.

In some cases the veteran has participated in some war, occupation, or police action at great risk to him/herself.

Sometimes the veteran survives the experience; sometimes not.

Families pay the price when the veteran dies; the survivors pay the price when the veterans lives.

Yea Jeff, it gets to me also.

3. disabled sanitation workers shouldn't have to pay tolls either
sanitation workers are an often underapreciated but critical part of our society
Without somebody collecting our rubbish or maintaining our sewers millions would die from disease.

we owe it to them
