2000 Recount getting HBO treatment

Wannabe extras turn out for 'Recount' casting call

Most of the 2000 election film will done in Jacksonville.

By MATT COLEMAN, The Times-Union

A steady stream of applicants flowed through the doors Saturday, each with the hope of reliving the contested 2000 presidential election.

Casting agents for the movie Recount said they expected to see about 2,000 at the Ed Ball Building at 214 N. Hogan St. who were hoping for a shot at a role as a big-screen extra in the HBO production.

***

A number of scenes in the movie involve crowd shots of protesters and will require thousands of voting-age extras, Davidson said. Senior citizens and college-age extras are in high demand for the shoot.

***

Davidson said she wasn't allowed to divulge the names of any members of the principal cast, but The Times-Union has reported that Kevin Spacey and William Hurt will star. Jay Roach, the director of Meet the Fockers and the Austin Powers series, will be behind the camera with Tootsie auteur Sydney Pollack as executive producer. The film was scripted by Buffy the Vampire Slayer actor Danny Strong.

Filming will begin Oct. 8.

And here's a link to an old article about the project from The Hill

HBO promises ‘fair’ recount movie made by Dem donors
By The Hill Staff
April 03, 2007

HBO is planning to make an unbiased film, titled “Recount” and scheduled to premiere early next year, about the 2000 presidential election.

That could be difficult, if not impossible, to pull off, because the director, executive producer, and writer of the movie are all Democrats. Oh, and Colin Callender, the president of HBO Films, is also a D.

The Hollywood Reporter this week quoted Callender as saying the movie won’t take sides and instead would be “a fascinating look at democracy.” Callender has made political donations to then-Rep. Harold Ford Jr. (D-Tenn.), Rep. Rahm Emanuel (D-Ill.), and Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.).

Executive Producer Paula Weinstein, who has given to Sens. Clinton, Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.) and Jon Tester (D-Mont.), praised Sydney Pollack for being the only director able to deal with the “dramatic twists and turns of the story with honesty and truthfulness.”

1. Good.
And they dare make disparaging statements and innuendo about how the DEMOCRATS may turn the story? Dammit. Don't they ever quit?

4. You don't understand
Everything they do is right and everything we do is wrong. If they whine it is complaining. If we complain and have evidence it is whining. It's kinda of like the Twilight Zone. ;)

8. I'm a lot more sympathetic to the characters now
that we're living in the Twilight Zone.

10. Not to mention you never know when Rod Serling will pop up
At least his cigarette gives him away when he's hiding in the shower with Norman Bates. :scared:

5. I don't think it will come out until next year
I saw in one of the articles mentioned that shooting would begin in October of this year. That's a few weeks away.

6. I could see him as Erskine Bowles
but I don't have a clue about what part he is actually playing.
