"I think life begins at conception but noooooo, I'm not a fundie!" |
|
And if you say I am, it's a personal attack.
And no, I won't say why I believe that. I believe it, period, and you gotta respect that!
Argh.

I wouldn't argue with it; it's an opinion. It's OK, as far as it goes. It's opposite, "life does not begin at conception," doesn't make sense, so I'll go along.
Some atheists use that reason to be anti-abortion, from a purely humanist point of view, but I note you didn't touch on that.
On edit: It suddenly occurred to me that you may have been toiling in R/T and you just encountered a slug. So that explains it. Putting that in context makes a difference. :) I'll let my comment stand. The statement is vague enough to be true. The issue is whether that's a person, and what rules apply, etc.

2. That person means the soul attaches at conception. |
|
Life is a continuous process that began at least 3.8 billion years ago and has continued since then. Ergo, it is meaningless to talk about the beginning of life during a pregnancy since the material contributed by the parents are also alive.

3. The same ass that doesn't believe a raped woman has a right to an abortion?! |
|
I alerted on that. :puke: That statement should earn that poster a tombstone, but I'm not holding my breath.

5. Even according to religious opinions, life begins outside the womb. |
|
Tell ya why: the word "Spirit" means breath. Same root as "respire" or "aspirate". You don't breathe until you're born, right?
So fundies even have that wrong, I'm afraid.
As for Jews, they believe that life begins when the fetus graduates from Medical School  At least, that's what my grandfather (the Rabbi's son) used to tell me!

6. I'll check with Thomas Aquinas and get back to you. |

Also Jim Wallis, the Dalai Lama, Karen Armstrong, Deepak Chopra and 200 obscure Internet theologians. Making sure I cut-and-paste about 5,000 words from each one.
So that by the time you get thru admiring my erudition, you will have forgotten the original debate we were having. Which is the whole point of such an exercise, IMO. Especially if the original debate involved proof of a God-Thingy.
Jebus! And I thought I was a thread-killing windbag!
