Whoa! Xian radio hosts a debate on evolution! |
|
Well, shoot. I haven't been this disappointed since last week, when I turned on a Science Channel show entitled American Beaver and found myself watching aquatic rodents.
Driving home from work today, I tuned into my local "Xian" radio station to see what they were bitching about.
Usually it's Obama and his simultaneous socialism/Nazism/communism. Jebus, I thought James Dobson was going to bust a blood vessel before the HCR vote last week. He was ranting so insanely on the radio, I could just see the spittle flying from his fleshy jowls. "Call your representatives in Congress right now! Right NOW! We want them to FEAR us on this issue! FEAR us!"
Yep, he actually said that.
Well, today, on The Intersection of Faith & Reason, host Frank Pastore promised "a lively debate about the age of the earth."
Wow! Were they going to debate Richard Dawkins? P.Z. Meyers?
I should have known better. What he meant was, a debate between an Old Earth Creationist (Hugh Ross) and a Young Earth Creationist (Jason Lie-all, er, Lyall).
As Pastore helpfully pointed out, "both are vigorous opponents of evolution. And both are astrophysicists!"
The parts I heard were...weird. Sort of like hearing two modern engineers debate whether the best way to construct a large building is by using the Egyptian pyramid model or the Mayan.

3. How the hell can an astrophysicist be a Young Earth Creationist? |
|
There's no possible way they can be reconciled. Or even held in the same brain without a complete split personality. He'd have to deny the size of the galaxy, the universe, the origins of the solar system, the precession of Earth's axis ... hell, he may as well go back to geocentrism.

4. I wondered about that myself. |

Like, um, did that degree in Astrophysics come from Liberty University?
Here's Wikipedia on Hugh Ross:
Ross accepts the scientific evidence of the age of the earth and the age of the universe, and he rejects evolution and abiogenesis as explanations for the history and origin of life.
OTOH, Jason Lyall absolutely refused to budge on his Young-Earth theory, but still claimed he could square astrophysics with Genesis.
I did not listen for very long, since I did not want to clean up my car after a Major Head Explosion...
