post your favorite atheistic song lyric!
I've had this one in my head lately. It's from the last few verses of Jethro Tull's Thick as a Brick:

Let me tell you the tales of your life
of your love and the cut of the knife
the tireless oppression, the wisdom instilled
the desire to kill or be killed.
Let me sing of the losers who lie
in the street as the last bus goes by.
The pavements are empty: the gutters run red
while the fool toasts his god in the sky.

I like how a lot of Tull's lyrics get us to focus on the troubles and the joys of the here and now, rather than what might exist in some distant fantasy land. This clip is saying "People are dying and struggling all around you; don't count on some god to descend from the sky and save you from them." Good advice for Bush, if you ask me.

1. The quintessential atheist song
Even though it fits more of the "angry theist" version of atheism ("I'm mad at god so I'm not going to believe in him") it's still got some nice poetic pearls of wisdom.

"Dear God" by XTC

Dear god,
Sorry to disturb you,
But I feel that I should be heard loud and clear.
We all need a big reduction in amount of tears,
And all the people that you made in your image,
See them fighting in the street,
’cause they can’t make opinions meet,
About god,
I can’t believe in you.

5. "Did you make mankind after we made you? "
That's my favorite line from that song.

I remember the first time I heard that song, I was in college (around age 21 I think) and had lost my only brother about 6 years prior. I was already a big XTC fan and still kind of half-believed in god; I remember being stunned by the boldness of the message. It made me think. At the time I was very angry at "god" because I felt like he had taken my 16 year old brother from me, so I completely identified with the rage in the song. It may have been the first time I really thought about the whole issue seriously. It made me feel good to sing it loud in the privacy of my car. I remember thinking if my parents could hear this, they'd be shocked and very upset. It is a very significant song to me because of all the emotion I was feeling at the time.

I understood the "I'm mad at god so I'm not going to believe in him" concept, and that made me want to investigate the matter further. I wasn't 100% willing to throw the beliefs I was was brought up with completely out the window, just because I was angry. I started looking into other religions and the roots of Christianity and then I saw it for what it was, and as time went on, I became more certain that mankind made god, not the other way around.

65. Against Me! - Walking Is Still Honest
Dear mother,
This is just survival.
Cannot promise your children everything,
But you would lie so they can sleep tonight.
Defeat tasted nothing like you said.
Still 22 days left till the end of the world.
My legacy was making you a man
For a justice I could not change.
This is one voice not to forget;
"Fight every fight like you can win;
An iron fisted champion,
An iron willed fuck up."

Can anybody tell me why God won't speak to me?
Why Jesus never called on me to part the fucking seas?
Why death is easier than living?
You can be almost anything
When you're on your fucking knees.
Not today,
Not my son,
Not my family,
Not while walking is still honest,
And you haven't given up on me.

Dear shithead,
This isn't happening;
The sky is really falling,
The paint's all made of lead,
There's asbestos in the walls,
Hell's come over to rip off the doors
To your priveleged heaven.
Do you want to love and feel it?
You can look but you can't taste it.
You can reach but you'll never have it.
We are untouchable;
Untouchable is something to be.

Can anybody tell me why God won't speak to me?
Why Jesus never called on me to part the fucking seas?
Why death is easier than living?
You can be almost anything
When you're on your fucking knees.
Not today,
Not my son,
Not my family,
Not while walking is still honest,
And you haven't given up on me,
And you haven't given up on me,
And you haven't forgotten me...

2. Imagine
by John Lennon

Imagine there's no heaven,
It's easy if you try,
No hell below us,
Above us only sky,
Imagine all the people
living for today...

Imagine there's no countries,
It isnt hard to do,
Nothing to kill or die for,
No religion too,
Imagine all the people
living life in peace...

Imagine no possesions,
I wonder if you can,
No need for greed or hunger,
A brotherhood of man,
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world...

You may say Im a dreamer,
but Im not the only one,
I hope some day you'll join us,
And the world will live as one.

I know a number of people who hate that song because Lennon dares to say "Imagine ... no religion," but I have to ask them what exactly they don't like about this picture. Nothing to kill for, no greed or hunger, sharing all the world. Why do people see this as a bad thing?

4. My respect for Neil Young...
Edited on Fri Apr-15-05 10:16 AM by onager
...went WAY up when he sang "Imagine" at the 9/11 benefit. (This was the first benefit, right after the attacks.)

This was a time, you may remember, when the God-talk was going on non-stop. That idiot Ben Whine, er, Ben Stein called the WTC attackers "atheists." Ann Coulter was ranting about killing all the Muslim leaders and converting Muslims to Xianity. Etc.

And as a rather bemused Richard Dawkins pointed out, every politician in the world had to join hands with theocrats like Franklin Graham, and pay homage to the very sort of monotheistic belief system that caused the attacks.

So it was a real breath of fresh air to see Neil Young get on stage and sing that one.

He even changed the lyrics a little, in a sly jab at all the mega-wealthy celebs surrounding him onstage:

Imagine no possesions,
I wonder if I can...

6. Love that album... here's my contribution, though
Judith

You're such an inspiration for the ways
That I'll never ever choose to be
Oh so many ways for me to show you
How the savior has abandoned you
Fuck your God
Your Lord and your Christ
He did this
Took all you had and
Left you this way
Still you pray, you never stray
Never taste of the fruit
You never thought to question why

It's not like you killed someone
It's not like you drove a hateful spear into his side
Praise the one who left you
Broken down and paralyzed
He did it all for you
He did it all for you

Oh so many many ways for me to show you
How your dogma has abandoned you
Pray to your Christ, to your god
Never taste of the fruit
Never stray, never break
Never---choke on a lie
Even though he's the one who did this to you
You never thought to question why

Not like you killed someone
It's Not like you drove a spiteful spear into his side
Talk to Jesus Christ
As if he knows the reasons why
He did it all for you
Did it all for you
He did it all for you

it completely sums up how I feel about my mom...such a strong woman who's endured so much, and is incapable of believing she's done it on her own. If I were in her shoes, I'd be cursing God for the shit that got thrown my way...she praises God for giving her the strength to get through it. *shakes head*

41. Same here, yet different.
My mom died of cancer at 47 a little over two years ago, and all my dad could say was that God was so good to her because he gave her peace, and actually did her a favor by letting her die so fast, since she was going through so much pain. Yes, I too am glad that she didn't have to suffer too long, but let's not act like 3 months ago, you were 100% sure that God was going to heal her and God would help her overcome it because she was faithful. It's the old "Praise God!" if she lived, and "The Lord Works In Mysterious Ways" or "God Delights In The Deaths Of His Saints" if she died, which is what I heard way too much. Ugh.

I'd be tempted to respond with "If he wanted to do her a favor, maybe he could have not given her the cancer in the first place, and let her live another 47 years so she could watch her grandchildren get married... "

...and most likely believes I'm just going through a "rebellion phase", but I'm not sure I could ever break it to him that I'm an atheist. It just wouldn't be worth it, and it's not something I feel I need to "get off my chest". I just live and let live.

Thanks for the condolences - it sucks, but that's a part of life. I always just think that I should be so lucky -- that she died when I was 22, instead of 5, or 8, or 12, or 17, like so many other people have had to experience.

78. Oh, I'm sorry about your mom..
...I'm 53 and I lost my 82 year old mother last year, and I STILL don't feel I had enough time with her. She too was an atheist and the people around me were stunned when I told them there'd be no service for her--as if I didn't love her enough to spend thousands of dollars to wail over a coporeal shell that no longer housed the mom I knew.

The same people also had the nerve to ask me where I found comfort, seeing as how I didn't believe in a higher power that was looking after her. WTF, am I 3 years old and need to be snowed with superstition in order to soldier on???

Here's where I find comfort, and let me know if you feel the same: Humans are not made in God's image, humans are not superior to the rest of the animals on this planet, we are beholden to the same natural order. And that natural order says that life is finite. We, with our Big Brains and convoluted emotions cannot escape death any more than a fruit fly can. That humbles me and lets me know my place in the universal scheme.

As for dealing with my individual grief, I carry all the memories of my wonderful mother, all that she has given to me is manifest every time I practice what she taught to me. For her, that was enough, and it is for me too.

8. Trent Reznor (a/k/a Nine Inch Nails) - Terrible Lie
Edited on Fri Apr-15-05 08:39 PM by Synnical
Not great, but worthy of a mention . . .

(Truncated to remove song worthy repeated enunciations)

hey God, why are you doing this to me?
am i not living up to what i'm supposed to be?
why am i seething with this animosity?
hey God, i think you owe me a great big apology

terrible lie
terrible lie

hey God, i really don't know what you mean
seems like salvation comes only in our dreams
i feel my hatred grow all the more extreme
hey God, can this world really be as sad as it seems

terrible lie
terrible lie

don't take it away from me
i need you to hold on to
don't take it away from me
i need you to hold on to
don't take it away from me

hey God, there's nothing left for me to hide
i lost my ignorance, security and pride
i'm all alone in a world you must despise
hey God, i believed your promises, your promises and lies

terrible lie
terrible lie

(terrible lie)
you made me throw it all away
my morals left to decay (terrible lie)
how many you betray
you've taken everything (terrible lie)
my head is filled with disease
my skin is begging you please (terrible lie)
i'm on my hands and knees
i want so much to believe

i give you everything
my sweet everything
i give you everything (i need someone to hold on to. i need someone to hold on to)
my sweet everything (i need someone. i need someone. i need someone to hold on to)

13. What do you think about Reznor's "Heresy"?
Heresy

He sewed his eyes shut because he is afraid to see
He tries to tell me what I put inside of me
He's got the answers to ease my curiosity
He dreamed a God up and called it Christianity
God is dead and no one cares
If there is a hell I'll see you there
He flexed his muscles to keep his flock of sheep in line
He made a virus that would kill off all the swine
His perfect kingdom of killing, suffering and pain
Demands devotion atrocities done in his name
God is dead and no one cares
If there is a hell I'll see you there
Your God is dead and no one cares
If there is a hell I'll see you there
God is dead and no one cares
If there is a hell I'll see you there your God is dead
God is dead and no one cares
And no one cares drowning in his own hypocrisy
And if there is a hell I will see you see you there

Burning with your God in humility
Will you die for this?

10. Billy Joel did an anti-cath-o-lick tune
Pivotal point - , "But virginia they didn’t give you quite enough information .. ."

Only the good die young

Come out virginia, don’t let me wait
You catholic girls start much too late
Aw but sooner or later it comes down to fate
I might as well be the one

They showed you a statue, told you to pray
They built you a temple and locked you away
But they never told you the price that you pay
For things that you might have done.....
Only the good die young
Thats what I said
Only the good die young

You might have heard I run with a dangerous crowd
We ain’t too pretty we ain’t too proud
We might be laughing a bit too loud
Aw but that never hurt no one

Come on virginia show me a sign
Send up a signal I’ll throw you the line
The stained-glass curtain you’re hiding behind
Never lets in the sun
Darlin’ only the good die young
I tell ya
Only the good die young

You got a nice white dress and a party on your confirmation
You got a brand new soul
Mmmm, and a cross of gold
But virginia they didn’t give you quite enough information
You didn’t count on me
When you were counting on your rosary

They say there’s a heaven for those who will wait
Some say it’s better but I say it ain’t
I’d rather laugh with the sinners than cry with the saints
The sinners are much more fun...

You say your mother told you all that I could give you was a reputation But, did she ever say a prayer for me?

12. John Prine's wonderfully bitter...
"Sam Stone." Which bears repeating considering the Current Holy Wars:

Sam Stone came home to his wife and family
After serving in the conflict overseas
And the time that he served, had shattered all his nerves
And left a little shrapnel in his knees
But the morphine eased his pain, and the grass grew around his brain
And gave him all the confidence he lacked
With a Purple Heart and a monkey on his back

(Chorus)
There's a hole in Daddy's arm, where all the money goes,
And Jesus Christ died for nothing, I suppose
Little pitchers have big ears, don't stop to count the tears,
Sweet songs never last too long on broken radios

Sam Stone's welcome home, it didn't last too long
He went to work when he'd spent his last dime
Then Sammy took to stealing, when he got that empty feeling
For a hundred-dollar habit without overtime
But the smack rolled thru his brain, like a thousand railroad trains
And eased his mind in the hours that he chose
While his kids ran around wearing other people's clothes

(Chorus)

Sam Stone was alone when he popped his last balloon
Climbing walls while sitting in a chair
And they played his last request,
While the room smelled just like death,
With an overdose a-hovering in the air
Ah, but life had lost its fun, and there was nothing to be done
But trade the house that he bought on the G.I. Bill,
For a flag-draped coffin on a local Heroes Hill

21. Roll The Bones (Rush)
Neal Peart has written a bunch of atheism-themed songs, but this one is one of my favorites.

Roll The Bones
Words by neil peart, music by geddy lee and alex lifeson

Well, you can stake that claim --
Good work is the key to good fortune
Winners take that praise
Losers seldom take that blame
If they don’t take that game
And sometimes the winner takes nothing
We draw our own designs
But fortune has to make that frame

We go out in the world and take our chances
Fate is just the weight of circumstances
That’s the way that lady luck dances
Roll the bones

Why are we here?
Because we’re here
Roll the bones
Why does it happen?
Because it happens
Roll the bones

Fate is cold as ice --
Why are little ones born only to suffer
For the want of immunity
Or a bowl of rice?
Well, who would hold a price
On the heads of the innocent children
If there’s some immortal power
To control the dice?

We come into the world and take our chances
Fate is just the weight of circumstances
That’s the way that lady luck dances
Roll the bones

Jack -- relax.
Get busy with the facts.
No zodiacs or almanacs,
No maniacs in polyester slacks.
Just the facts.
Gonna kick some gluteus max.
It’s a parallax -- you dig?
You move around
The small gets big. it’s a rig.
It’s action -- reaction --
Random interaction.
So who’s afraid
Of a little abstraction?
Can’t get no satisfaction
From the facts?
You better run, homeboy --
A fact’s a fact
From nome to rome, boy.

What’s the deal? spin the wheel.
If the dice are hot -- take a shot.
Play your cards. show us what you got --
What you’re holding.
If the cards are cold,
Don’t go folding.
Lady luck is golden;
She favors the bold. that’s cold.
Stop throwing stones --
The night has a thousand saxophones.
So get out there and rock,
And roll the bones.
Get busy!

22. More Rush... Freewill
Rush - Freewill
Words by neil peart, music by geddy lee and alex lifeson

There are those who think that life
Has nothing left to chance
A host of holy horrors
To direct our aimless dance

A planet of playthings
We dance on the strings
Of powers we cannot perceive
"the stars aren't aligned ---
Or the gods are malign"
Blame is better to give than receive

You can choose a ready guide
In some celestial voice
If you choose not to decide
You still have made a choice

You can choose from phantom fears
And kindness that can kill
I will choose a path that's clear
I will choose free will

There are those who think that they've been dealt a losing hand
The cards were stacked against them ---
They weren't born in lotus-land

All preordained
A prisoner in chains
A victim of venomous fate
Kicked in the face
You can't pray for a place
In heaven's unearthly estate

Each of us
A cell of awareness
Imperfect and incomplete
Genetic blends
With uncertain ends
On a fortune hunt
That's far too fleet...

24. God is a Concept By Which We Measure Our Pain - John Lennon
God is a concept,
By which we measure
Our pain.
I'll say it again.
God is a concept,
By which we measure
Our pain.

I don't believe in magic
I don't believe in I-Ching
I don't believe in Bible
I don't believe in Tarot
I don't believe in Hitler
I don't believe in Jesus
I don't believe in Kennedy
I don't believe in Buddha
I don't believe in Mantra
I don't believe in Gita
I don't believe in Yoga
I don't believe in Kings
I don't believe in Elvis
I don't believe in Zimmerman
I don't believe in Beatles
I just believe in me
Yoko and me
And that's reality.

The dream is over,
What can I say?
The dream is over
Yesterday
I was the dreamweaver,
But now I'm reborn.
I was the walrus,
But now I'm John.
And so dear friends,
You just have to carry on
The dream is over.

Your Body May Be Gone
Im Gonna Carry You In
In My Head In My Heart In My Soul
And Maybe Well Get Lucky And Well Both Live Again
Well I Dont Know I Dont Know I Dont Know Dont Think So
Well That Is That And This Is This
You Tell Me What You Want And Ill Tell You What You Get
You Get Away From Me
You Get Away From Me
Collected My Belongings And I Left The Jail
Well Thanks For The Time
I Needed To Think A Spell
I Had To Think Awhile, I Had To Think Awhile
The Ocean Breathes Salty Wont You Carry It In
In Your Head, In Your Mouth, In Your Soul
And Maybe Well Get Lucky And Well Both Grow Old
Well I Dint Know I Dont Know I Dont Know I Hope So
Well That Is That And This Is This
You Tell Me What You Want And Ill Tell You What You Get
You Get Away From Me
You Get Away From Me
Collected My Belongings And I Left The Jail
Well Thanks For The Time
I Needed To Think A Spell
I Had To Think Awhile, I Had To Think Awhile
Well That Is That And This Is This
Will You Tell Me What You Saw And Ill Tell You What You Missed
When The Ocean Met The Sky
You Missed When Time And Life Shook Hands And Said Goodbye
When The Earth Folded In On Itself And Said:
"Good Luck For Your Sake I Hope Heaven And Hell Are Really There, But I
Wouldnt Hold My Breath"
You Wasted Life, Why Wouldnt You Waste Death?
The Ocean Breathes Salty Wont You Carry It In
In Your Head In Your Mouth In Your Soul
The More We Move Ahead The More Were Stick In Rewind
Well I Dont Mind. I Dont Mind
How The Hell Me
Well That Is That And This Is This
You Tell Me What You Want And Ill Tell You What You Get
You Get Away From Me
You Get Away From Me
Well That Is That And This Is This
Will You Tell Me What You Saw And Ill Tell You What You Missed
When The Ocean Met The Sky
You Wasted Life
Why Wouldnt You Waste The Afterlife?

26. Styrofoam Boots/ It's All Nice on Ice -- Modest Mouse
Well all's not well
but i'm told that it'll all be quite nice
you'll be drowned in boots like Mafia
but your feet will still float like Christ's
and i'll be damned
they were right
i'm drowning upside down
my feet afloat like Christ's
i'm in heaven
trying to figure out which stack
they're going to stuff us atheists into
when Peter and his monkey laugh
and i laugh with them
i'm not sure what at
they point and say
we'll keep you in the back
polishing halos, baking manna and gas
well some guy comes in looking a bit like everyone i ever seen
he moves just like crisco disco
breath 100% listerine
he says looking at something else
but directing everything to me
ever time anyone gets on their knees to pray
well it makes my telephone ring
and i'll be damned
he said you were right
no one's running this whole thing
he had a theory too
he said that god takes care of himself
and you of you
it's all nice on ice alright
and it's not day
and it's not night
but it's all nice on ice alright

27. I think this one applies...
...since so much of "Western civilization" is tied up with religion. An oldie by Tonio K., who did a lot of good/weird songs. I mean, you gotta like a guy who names himself for a Kafka hero...

There's a fire in the courthouse, there's a riot in the street,
There's a sinner being trampled by a thousand pious feet,
There's a baby every minute being born without a chance,
Now don't that make you wanna get right up and start to dance?

Let's do the funky, funky Western civilization...

You just grab your partner by the hair, throw her down and leave her there.

Well, they put Jesus on a cross and shot a hole in JFK,
They put Hitler in the driver's seat and looked the other way,
Now we got poison in the water and the whole world's in a trance,
But just because we're hypnotized, that don't mean we can't dance!

Let's do the funky, funky Western civilization...

You just throw your partner in the dirt, put her in a world of hurt.

Then it seques into Joan Of Arc singing...

I have always gone looking for this song when tragedy strikes in my world... Ladies and Gentlemen, Steely Dan:

I never seen you looking so bad my funky one
You tell me that your superfine mind has come undone
CHORUS:
Any major dude with half a heart surely will tell you my friend
Any minor world that breaks apart falls together again
When the demon is at your door
In the morning it won't be there no more
Any major dude will tell you

Have you ever seen a squonk's tears? Well, look at mine
The people on the street have all seen better times

CHORUS

I can tell you all I know, the where to go, the what to do
You can try to run but you can't hide from what's inside of you

32. Sammy Hagar - Salvation On Sand Hill
Edited on Fri Apr-22-05 11:30 PM by beam me up scottie
Sammy Hagar Salvation On Sand Hill

I wasn't worried
I walked into the room
I saw the serpent's shadow
Against the silver moon

They said as long as you believe
You'll be alright

And I wasn't worried
'Til I saw one bite

You could touch, you could feel
You could smell them all through the night

But as long as you believe, you're gonna be alright

Or you'll be running, running for your life

But I didn't worry, when I caught the spell
I saw the eyes, saw the teeth, beads of sweat
Think I'd gone to hell

They said as long as you believe
A snake won't bite

Or you'll be running, running for your life

But I've gotta tell you
Power over snakes
Sure makes me feel so different
From a cane break

And just as long as you believe
A snake won't bite, yeah

Taking up serpents can take your life
They stuck my hand down in there without a bite

Just as long as you believe, boy
You'll be alright

I should be running, running for my life

Oh I didn't tell you
About the one that got bit
On the face, on the arms
Between the legs, on the back of the neck

You see, he didn't believe
The boy didn't believe
I said he didn't believe
He didn't believe

And just as long as you believe, a snake won't bite

So I didn't worry 'cause the snake won't bite
The snake won't bite
The snake won't bite

"have you ever seen a picture of pope paul
have you ever asked yourself this question
would you trust this man with your soul now
would you trust this man ask yourself now
his eyes are sunken and his cheeks are hollow
while you dig the poor of the world they follow
he hoarding up their gold in the vatican
would you trust this man ask yourself now
a poke at the pope that's what we're havin'
ave maria
do you remember when the floods hit italy
how all the things they treasured most were destroyed
all the paintings and the worshipped images
'cos they lost their faith in the real god
he's goin' down and he's goin' down fast
you really didn't think the ignorance could last
all the little children are learning
and the constellation is turning
a poke at the pope that's what we're havin'
mumbling by the tumbling tide
the king of america humbly cried
save my soul save it soon
the king of america fell in swoon
oh yea my honey
oh yea my money

Choices always were a problem for you.
What you need is someone strong to guide you.
Deaf and blind and dumb and born to follow,
what you need is someone strong to use you...
like me,
like me.

If you want to get your soul to heaven,
trust in me.
Don't judge or question.
You are broken now,
but faith can heal you.
Just do everything I tell you to do.
Deaf and blind and dumb and born to follow.
Let me lay my holy hand upon you.

My God's will
becomes me.
When he speaks out,
he speaks through me.
He has needs
like I do.
We both want
to rape you.

Jesus Christ, why don't you come save my life.
Open my eyes and blind me with your light
and your lies.

No saints, no sinners, no devil as well
No pearly gates, no thorny crown

The wars you bring, the babes you drown
Those lost at sea and never found
And it's the same the whole world 'round
The hurt I see helps to compound
That father, son and holy ghost
Is just somebody's unholy hoax
And if you're up there you'll perceive
That my heart's here upon my sleeve
If there's one thing I don't believe in

It's you

You simply fill the gap between the upper and lower class and your faith merely keeps you in line.
An amalgamation of jewish scripture and christian thought.
What will that get you?

40. Jesus Loves me but he Can't Stand You - Austin Lounge Lizards
I know you smoke, I know you drink that brew
I just can't abide a sinner like you
God can't either, that's why I know it to be true that
Jesus loves me--but he can't stand you

I'm going to heaven, boys, when I die
'Cause I've crossed every "t" and I've dotted every "i'
My preacher tell me that I'm God's kind of guy; that's why
Jesus loves me--but you're gonna fry

God loves all his children, by gum
That don't mean he won't incinerate some
Can't you feel those hot flames licking you
Woo woo woo

I'm raising my kids in a righteous way
So don't be sending your kids over to my house to play
Yours'll grow up stoned, left-leaning, and gay; I know
Jesus told me on the phone today

Jesus loves me, this I know
And he told me where you're gonna go
There's lots of room for your kind down below
Whoa whoa whoa

Jesus loves me but he can't stand you . . .

by Tori Amos. Not necessarily athiestic but interesting consideringt her father is a minister.

God, sometimes you just don't come through
God, sometimes you just don't come through
Do you need a woman to look after you
God, sometimes you just don't come through

You make pretty daisies, pretty daisies love
I gotta find what you're doing about things here
A few witches burning gets a little toasty here
I gotta find
Why you always go
When the wind blows

God, sometimes you just don't come through
God, sometimes you just don't come through
Do you need a woman to look after you
God, sometimes you just don't come through

Tell me you're crazy maybe then I'll understand
You got your 9 iron in the back seat just in case
You heard you've gone south
Well, baby, you love your new 4 wheel
I gotta find
Why you always go
When the wind blows

Will you even tell her
If you decide to make the sky fall
Will you even tell her
If you decide to make the sky fall

God, sometimes you just don't come through
God, sometimes you just don't come through
Do you need a woman to look after you
God, sometimes you just don't come through

"The Last Resort" by The Eagles
...
You can leave it all behind
and sail to Lahaina
just like the missionaries did, so many years ago
They even brought a neon sign: "Jesus is coming"
Brought the white man's burden down
Brought the white man's reign

And we'll provide the grand design
What is yours and what is mine?
'Cause there is no more new frontier
We have got to make it here

We satisfy our endless needs and
justify our bloody deeds,
in the name of destiny
and in the name of God

And you can see them there,
On Sunday morning
They stand up and sing about
what it's like up there
They call it paradise
I don't know why
You call someplace paradise,
kiss it goodbye

46. King Missile: Jesus is way cool
This is friggin' sacrilege

Jesus was way cool
Everybody liked Jesus
Everybody wanted to hang out with him
Anything he wanted to do, he did
He turned water into wine
And if he wanted to
He could have turned wheat into marijuana
Or sugar into cocaine
Or vitamin pills into amphetamines

He walked on the water
And swam on the land
He would tell these stories
And people would listen
He was really cool

If you were blind or lame
You just went to Jesus
And he would put his hands on you
And you would be healed
That's so cool

He could've played guitar better than Hendrix
He could've told the future
He could've baked the most delicious cake in the world
He could've scored more goals than Wayne Gretzky
He could've danced better than Barishnikov
Jesus could have been funnier than any comedian you can think of
Jesus was way cool

He told people to eat his body and drink his blood
That's so cool
Jesus was so cool
But then some people got jealous of how cool he was
So they killed him
But then he rose from the dead
He rose from the dead, danced around
Then went up to heaven
I mean, that's so cool
Jesus was way cool

No wonder there are so many Christians.........

He could've scored more goals than Wayne Gretzky LMAO

Let's give Jesus Christ the football

Let him run it thru the crossbars...
Half of which he's seen before.

I think he was taking a jab at this old country song, recorded by Bobby Bare and others:

Drop-kick me, Jesus, thru the goalpost of life
Straight thru the middle, neither left nor the right
Straight thru the heart of them righteous uprights,
Drop-kick me, Jesus, thru the goalpost of life

76. I got mine from Eric Burdon's Sky Pilot
Not only is this one of the best anti-war songs ever, I always saw it as a realy sarcastic comment on the uselessness of the "god-is-on-our-side nature of religion. And the pure irony of a "holy man" ministering to a group of trained killers.

SKY PILOT
THE ANIMALS

He blesses the boys as they stand in line
The smell of gun grease and their bayonets they shine
He's here to help them all that he can
To make them feel wanted he's a good holy man.
Sky pilot, sky pilot, how high can you fly?
You'll never never never reach the sky.
He smiles at the young soldiers
Tells them it's all right
He knows of their fears in the forthcoming fight
Soon there'll be blood and many will die
Mother and fathers back home they will cry.
Sky pilot, sky pilot, how high can you fly?
You'll never never never reach the sky.
He mumbles a prayer and it ends with a smile
The order is given they move down the line
He'll stay behind and he'll meditate
But it won't stop to bleeding or ease the hate.
As the young men move out into the battle zone
He feels good; with god you're never alone
He feels so tired; he lays on his bed
Hopes the men will find courage
In the words that he's said.
Sky pilot, sky pilot, how high can you fly?
You'll never never never reach the sky.
You're soldiers of god you must understand
The fate of your country is in your young hands
May god give you strength do your job really well
If it all was worth in only time it will tell.
In the morning they return with tears in their eyes
The stench of death drifts up to the skies
A young soldier so ill looks at the sky pilot
And remembers the words "thou shalt not kill".

52. Building a Religion
Bulding a Religion,
Cake

We are building a religion,
We are building it bigger
We are widening the corridors and adding more lanes
We are building a religion.
A limited edition
We are now accepting callers for these pendant keychains
To resist it is useless,
It is useless to resist it
His cigerratte is burning but it never seems to ash
He is grooming his poodle
He is living comfort eagle
You can meet at his location but you'd better come with cash

Now his hat is on backwards. He can show you his tattoos
He is in the music buisness he is calling you "DUDE!"

Now today is tomorrow and tomorrow's today
And yesterday is weaving in and out
And the fluffy white lines that the airplane leaves behind
Are drifting right in front of the waning of the moon

He is handling the money. He's serving the food
He knows about your party. He is calling you "DUDE!"

Now, do you believe in the one big sign?
The double wide shine on the boot hills of your prime
Doesn't matter if you're skinny. Doesn't matter if you're fat.
You can dress up like a sultan in your onion-head hat

We are bulding a religion. We are making a brand
We're the only ones to turn to when your castles turn to sand
Take a bit of this apple, Mr. Corporate Events
Take a walk through the jungle of cardboard shedies and tents
Some people drink pepsi. Some people drink coke. (coke)
The wacky morning d.j. says democracy's a joke.

He says now, "Do you believe in the one big song?"
He's now accepting callers who would like to sing along
He says, "Do you believe in the one true edge?"
By fastening your saftey belts and stepping towards the ledge

He is handling the money. He is serving the food.
He is now accepting callers. He is calling me "DUDE!"

Do you believe in the one big sign?
The double wide shine on the boot hills of your prime.
There's no need to ask directions if you ever lose your mind
We're behind you. We're behind you.
And let us please remind you
We can send a car to find you
If you ever lose your way

We are bulding a religion...
We are bulding it bigger...
We are building............... a religion.......
A limited edition
We are now accepting callers for these beautiful pendant keychains

53. FZ - "Jesus Thinks You're a Jerk"
There’s an ugly little wasel ’bout three-foot nine
Face puffed up from cryin’ ’n lyin’
’cause her sweet little hubby’s
Suckin’ prong part time
(in the name of the lord)

Get a clue, little shrew
Oh yeah, oh yeah
Jesus thinks you’re a jerk

Did he really choose tammy to do his work?
Robertson says that he’s the one
Oh he sure is,
If armageddon
Is your idea of family fun,
An’ he’s got some planned for you!
(now, tell me that ain’t true)

Now, what if jimbo’s slightly gay,
Will pat let jimbo get away?
Everything we’ve heard him say
Indicated that jim must pay,
(and it just might hurt a bit)
But keep that money rollin’ in,
’cause pat and naughty jimbo
Can’t get enough of it

Perhaps it’s their idea
Of an affirmative action plan
To give white trash a ’special break’;
Well, they took those jeezo-bucks and ran
To the bank! to the bank! to the bank! to the bank!
And every night we can hear them thank
Their buddy, up above
For sending down his love
(while you all smell the glove)

Jim and pat should take a pole
(right up each saintly glory-hole),
With tar and feathers too --
Just like they’d love to do to you

(’cause they think you are bad --
And they are very mad)

’cause some folks don’t want prayer in school!

(we’d need an ark to survive the drool
Of micro-publicans, raised on hate,
And ’jimbo-jimbo’ when they graduate)

Conviced they are ’the chosen ones’ --
And all their parents carry guns,
And hold them cards in the n.r.a.
(with their fingers on the triggers
When they kneel and pray)

With a ku-klux muu-muu
In the back of the truck,
If you ain’t born again,
They wanna mess you up, screamin’:
’no abortion, no-siree!’
’life’s too precious, can’t you see!’
(what’s that hangin’ from the neighbor’s tree?
Why, it looks like ’colored folks’ to me --
Would they do that...seriously? )

Imagine if you will
A multi-millionaire television evangelist,
Saved from korean combat duty by his father, a u.s. senator

Studied law --
But is not qualified to practice it

Father of a ’love child’
Who, in adulthood, hosts the remnants
Of papa’s religious propaganda program

Claims not to be a ’faith healer’,
But has, in the past,
Dealt stearnly with everything from hemorrhoids to hurricanes

Involved with funding for a ’secret war’ in central america
Claiming ronald reagan and oliver north as close friends

Involved in suspicous ’tax-avoidance schemes’,
(under investigation for 16 months by the i.r.s.)

Claims to be a man of god;
Currenty seeking the united states presidency,
Hoping we will all follow him into --
The twilight zone

What if pat gets in the white house,
And suddenly --
The rights of ’certain people’ disappear
Mysteriously?

Now, wouldn’t that sort of qualify
As an american tragedy?
(especially if he covers it up, sayin’
’jesus told it to me!’)

I hope we never see that day,
In the land of the free --
Or someday will we?
Will we?

And if you don’t know by now,
The truth of what I’m tellin’ you,
Then, surely I have failed somehow --

And jesus will think I’m a jerk, just like you --
If you let those tv preachers
Make a monkey out of you!

I said:
’jesus will think you’re a jerk’
And it would be true!

There’s an old rugged cross
In the land of cutton --
It’s still burnin’ on somebody’s lawn
And it still smells rotten

Jim and tammy!
Oh, baby!
You gotta go!
You really got to go!

56. From Corrosion of Conformity
Born Again For the Last Time

When you live your life uptight untrusted
but they're blind from the grind but only you can see
when the bones that you own have long been dusted
you realize who you're not supposed to be

I've been told things get better
Isolation grind
My life is Hazy Hazy Hazy
So I'm born again for the last time

when your life was lived fully cocked and loaded
but your soul was empty through and through
it makes me realize maybe you sold it
for the dream of a lifetime or maybe two...YEAH YOU

I've been told things get better
Isolation grind
My life is Hazy Hazy Hazy
So I'm born again for the last time

One last stand for this dying man
can we get a round of sympathy
I think it's too late he was never forward or straight
much like the one watching over me

Dizzy with greed now you've got everything you need
as you cling to the one who stands second to none
walls start to fall at the thought of it all
poorer by dawn then I was at the dawn; I'm gone...TAKE ME

I've been told things get better
Isolation grind
My life is Hazy Hazy Hazy
So I'm born again for the last time

hypocracy for the masses!

U2 For John Lennon

Don't believe the devil
I don't believe his book
But the truth is not the same
Without the lies he made up

Don't believe in excess
Success is to give
Don't believe in riches
But you should see where I live
I...I believe in love

Don't believe in forced entry
Don't believe in rape
But every time she passes by
Wild thoughts escape
I don't believe in death row
Skid row or the gangs
Don't believe in the Uzi
It just went off in my hand
I...I believe in love

Don't believe in cocaine
Got a speed-ball in my head
I could cut and crack you open
Do you hear what I said
Don't believe them when they tell me
There ain't no cure
The rich stay healthy
While the sick stay poor
I...I believe in love

Don't believe in Goldman
His type like a curse
Instant karma's going to get him
If I don't get him first
Don't believe that rock 'n' roll
Can really change the world
As it spins in revolution
It spirals and turns
I...I believe in love

Don't believe in the 60's
The golden age of pop
You glorify the past
When the future dries up
Heard a singer on the radio late last night
He says he's gonna kick the darkness
'til it bleeds daylight
I...I believe in love

I feel like I'm falling
Like I'm spinning on a wheel
It always stops beside of me
With a presence I can feel
I...I believe in love

59. The The: "Sweet Bird of Truth"
A powerful song framed at the end of the Gulf War that we thought was over in 1992. The subject is a military man who has to deliver death to some other country's citizens. Then he and his hands have to deal with it.

A quantum gesture of mercy

-=-o-=-

6 o'clock in the morning
And I'm the last person in this plane still awake
Y'know I can almost smell the blood
Washing against the shores
Of this land that can't forget its past
Oh, the wind that carries this plane
Is the wind of change
Heaven sent and hell bent
Over the mountain tops we go
Just like all the other G.I. Joe's
Ee aye ee aye adios!

This is your captain calling
With an urgent warning
We're above the Gulf of Arabia
Our altitude is falling
And I can't hold her up
There's no time for thinking
All hands on deck
This bird is sinking

Across the beaches and cranes
Rivers and trains
All the money I've made
Bodies I've maimed
Time was when I seemed to know
Just like any other G.I. Joe
Should I cry like a baby
Or die like a man?
While all the planets little wars
Start joining hands
Oh, what a heaven what a hell
Y'know there's nothing can be done
In this whole wide world

I don't know what's wrong or right
I'm just a regular guy
With bottled up insides
I ain't ever been to church
Or believed in Jesus Christ
But I'm praying
That God's with you when you die

60. Plastic Jesus...
Well, I don't care if it rains or freezes,
Long as I have my plastic Jesus
Riding on the dashboard of my car
Through all trials and tribulations,
We will travel every nation,
With my plastic Jesus I'll go far.

CHORUS
Plastic Jesus, plastic Jesus
Riding on the dashboard of my car
Through my trials and tribulations,
And my travels thru the nations,
With my plastic Jesus I'll go far.

I don't care if it rains or freezes
As long as I've got my Plastic Jesus
Glued to the dashboard of my car,
You can buy Him phosphorescent
Glows in the dark, He's Pink and Pleasant,
Take Him with you when you're travelling far

I don't care if it's dark or scary
Long as I have magnetic Mary
Ridin' on the dashboard of my car
I feel I'm protected amply
I've got the whole damn Holy Family
Riding on the dashboard of my car

You can buy a Sweet Madonna
Dressed in rhinestones sitting on a
Pedestal of abalone shell
Goin' ninety, I'm not wary
'Cause I've got my Virgin Mary
Guaranteeing I won't go to Hell

I don't care if it bumps or jostles
Long as I got the Twelve Apostles
Bolted to the dashboard of my car
Don't I have a pious mess
Such a crowd of holiness
Strung across the dashboard of my car

ALT CHORUS
No, I don't care if it rains or freezes
Long as I have my plastic Jesus
Riding on the dashboard of my car
But I think he'll have to go
His magnet ruins my radio
And if we have a wreck he'll leave a scar

Riding through the thoroughfare
With his nose up in the air
A wreck may be ahead, but he don't mind
Trouble coming, he don't see
He just keeps his eyes on me
And any other thing that lies behind

ALT CHORUS
Plastic Jesus, Plastic Jesus
Riding on the dashboard of my car
Though the sun shines on his back
Makes him peel, chip, and crack
A little patching keeps him up to par

When pedestrians try to cross
I let them know who's boss
I never blow my horn or give them warning
I ride all over town
Trying to run them down
And it's seldom that they live to see the morning

ALT CHORUS
Plastic Jesus, Plastic Jesus
Riding on the dashboard of my car
His halo fits just right
And I use it as a sight
And they'll scatter or they'll splatter near and far

When I'm in a traffic jam
He don't care if I say Damn
I can let all sorts of curses roll
Plastic Jesus doesn't hear
For he has a plastic ear
The man who invented plastic saved my soul

ALT CHORUS
Plastic Jesus, Plastic Jesus
Riding on the dashboard of my car
Once his robe was snowy white
Now it isn't quite so bright
Stained by the smoke of my cigar

God made Christ a Holy Jew
God made Him a Christian too
Paradoxes populate my car
Joseph beams with a feigned elan
From the shaggy dash of my furlined van
Famous cuckold in the master plan

Naughty Mary, smug and smiling
Jesus dainty and beguiling
Knee-deep in the piling of my van
His message clear by night or day
My phosphorescent plastic Gay
Simpering from the dashboard of my van

When I'm goin' fornicatin
I got my ceramic Satan
Sinnin' on the dashboard of my Winnebago Motor Home
The women know I'm on the level
Thanks to the wild-eyed stoneware devil
Ridin' on the dashboard of my Winnebago Motor Home
Sneerin' from the dashboard of my Winnebago Motor Home
Leering from the dashboard of my van

If I weave around at night
And the police think I'm tight
They'll never find my bottle, though they ask
Plastic Jesus shelters me
For His head comes off, you see
He's hollow, and I use Him for a flask

ALT CHORUS
Plastic Jesus, plastic Jesus
Riding on the dashboard of my car
Ride with me and have a dram
Of the blood of the Lamb
Plastic Jesus is a holy bar

There is nothin that is cuter
than a smilin Jolly Buddha,
Ridin on the dashboard of my car,
I don't have no idol cuter,
comes in plastic, bronze and pewter,
Take him with me when I go afar.

Jolly Buddha, fat and squattin,
on a pad of aspirin cotton,
He's with me wherever I may roam,
When it's late and I start to hurry,
I know he ain't gonna worry,
He looks at me and all he says is, "Oooommmmmmm."

There is nothing that is gaucher
Than eatin food that isn't kosher,
Right in front of my smilin Moses' face,
I'm afraid that he'll awaken
When I'm eatin ham or bacon,
And throw them Ten Commandments in my face.

I don't care if I'm broke or starvin'
As long as I've got a fish named Darwin
Glued to the trunklid of my car
God, I'm feeling so evolved
Drivin' with my problems solved
Proclaiming what I think of what we are

Riding home one foggy night,
With my honey cuddled tight,
I missed a curve and off the road we veered.
My windshield got smashed-up good,
And my darling graced the hood.
Plastic Jesus, He had disappeared.

cho: Plastic Jesus! Plastic Jesus,
No longer chides me with His holy grin.
Doctors in the X-ray room
Found Him in my darling's womb.
Someday, He'll be born again!

I don't care if it rains or freezes
Long as I got my plastic Jesus
Riding on the dashboard of my car
He's the dude with the rusty nails,
Walks on water, don't need no sails
Riding on the dashboard of me car

I don't care if the night is scary
As long as I got the Virgin Mary
Sittin' on the dashboard of my car.
She don't slip and she don't slide
Cuz her butt is magnetized
Sittin' on the dashboard of my car.

Now I'm feeling quite contrary,
cos I got the Virgin Mary
Sitting on the dashboard of my car
There's no room for imperfection,
in my Catholic collection
Which sits upon the dashboard of my car

Jesus, Mary and St. Patrick,
now I've got the holy hat-trick
Sitting on the dashboard of my car
One more statue I've got to get
is the plastic Bernadette
Sitting on the dashboard of my car

Plastic Jesus, you've got to go,
your magnet's burst my radio
Sitting on the dashboard of my car
But I, won't lose faith and I won't lose hope
cos, now I've got a pope on a rope
Swinging from the dashboard of my car

Once as I drove to Knock,
at a petrol station I got a shock
at the special offers that they had for me
20 more points and I can barter for a Jesus with stigmata
to sit upon the dashboard of my car

61. Hero - Mariah Carey.
Edited on Fri Sep-21-07 08:59 PM by Evoman
Okay, not really. But I heard it on the radio, and it turned into an ear worm. And because I fucking hate it as much as religion, why not combine the two?

Heres a couple of Stanzas of "Religion", sung to the tune of Mariah Carey's "Hero"

Theres no Jesus
If you look inside your heart
You don't have to be afraid
Of no damn god

There's no answers
if your reach into your ass
and pull out the first darned thing
you fucking grab.

And then religion comes along
and all the fucking reason's gone
And you cast logic aside
in order for it to survive
So when you feel instead of think
Look inside your battered brain
And you'll finally see the truth
That religion's fucking with you.

62. Frank Zappa - "Dumb All Over"

Whoever we are
Wherever we're from
We shoulda noticed by now
Our behavior is dumb
And if our chances
Expect to improve
It's gonna take a lot more
Than tryin' to remove
The other race
Or the other whatever
From the face
Of the planet altogether

They call it THE EARTH
Which is a dumb kinda name
But they named it right
'Cause we behave the same . . .
We are dumb all over
Dumb all over,
Yes we are
Dumb all over,
Near 'n far
Dumb all over,
Black 'n white
People, we is not wrapped tight

Nurds on the left
Nurds on the right
Religious fanatics
On the air every night
Sayin' the Bible
Tells the story
'N makes the details
Sound real gory
'Bout what to do
If the geeks over there
Don't believe in the book
We got over here

You can't run a race
Without no feet
'N pretty soon
There won't be no street
For dummies to jog on
Or doggies to dog on
Religious fanatics
Can make it be all gone
(I mean it won't blow up
'N disappear
It'll just look ugly
For a thousand years . . . )

You can't run a country
By a book of religion
Not by a heap
Or a lump or a smidgeon
Of foolish rules
Of ancient date
Designed to make
You all feel great
While you fold, spindle
And mutilate
Those unbelievers
From a neighboring state

TO ARMS! TO ARMS!
Hooray! That's great
Two legs ain't bad
Unless there's a crate
They ship the parts
To mama in
For souvenirs: two ears (Get Down!)
Not his, not hers (but what the hey?)
The Good Book says:
"It gotta be that way!"
But their book says:
"REVENGE THE CRUSADES . . .
With whips 'n chains
'N hand grenades . . . "
TWO ARMS? TWO ARMS?
Have another and another
Our God says:
"There ain't no other!"
Our God says
"It's all okay!"
Our God says
"This is the way!"

It says in the book:
"Burn 'n destroy . . .
'N repent, 'n redeem
'N revenge, 'n deploy
'N rumble thee forth
To the land of the unbelieving scum on the other side
'Cause they don't go for what's in the book
'N that makes 'em BAD
So verily we must choppeth them up
And stompeth them down
Or rent a nice French bomb
To poof them out of existance
While leaving their real estate just where we need it
To use again
For temples in which to praise
OUR GOD
("Cause he can really take care of business!")

And when his humble TV servant
With humble white hair
And humble glasses
And a nice brown suit
And maybe a blonde wife who takes phone calls
Tells us our God says
It's okay to do this stuff
Then we gotta do it,
'Cause if we don't do it,
We ain't gwine up to hebbin!
(Depending on which book you're using at the time . . . Can't use theirs . . . it don't work . . . it's all lies . . . Gotta use mine . . . )
Ain't that right?
That's what they say
Every night . . .
Every day . . .
Hey, we can't really be dumb
If we're just following God's Orders
Hey, Let's get serious . . .
God knows what he's doin' . . .
He wrote this book here
An' the book says:
"He made us all to be just like Him," so . . .
If we're dumb . . .
Then God is dumb . . .
(An' maybe even a little ugly on the side)

"Holy Wars...The Punishment Due"

Brother will kill brother
Spilling blood across the land
Killing for religion
Something I don't understand

Fools like me, who cross the sea
And come to foreign lands
Ask the sheep, for their beliefs
Do you kill on God's command?

A country that's divided
Surely will not stand
My past erased, no more disgrace
No foolish naive stand

The end is near, it's crystal clear
Part of the master plan
Don't look now to Israel
It might be your homelands

Holy wars

Holy Wars... The Punishment Due
Upon my podium, as the
Know it all scholar
Down in my seat of judgement
Gavel's bang, uphold the law
Up on my soapbox, a leader
Out to change the world
Down in my pulpit as the holier
Than-thou-could-be-messenger of God

...The Punishment Due

Wage the war on organized crime
Sneak attacks, repel down the rocks
Behind the lines
Some people risk to employ me
Some people live to destroy me
Either way they die

They killed my wife, and my baby
With hopes to enslave me
First mistake... last mistake!
Paid by the alliance, to slay all the giants
Next mistake... no more mistakes!

Fill the cracks in, with judicial granite
Because I don't say it, don't mean I ain't
Thinkin' it
Next thing you know, they'll take my thoughts away
I know what I said, now I must scream of the
overdose
And the lack of mercy killings

Title: I Ain't Superstitious

I ain't superstitious,
When a black cat crosses my path.
And, I ain't superstitious,
As I break the looking glass.
Ain't afraid of no demons,
Don't make me laugh!
I ain't superstitious,
Under the ladder I go.
I ain't superstitious,
It's all bulls**t, don't you know!
Ain't afraid of the shadows,
I like the dark anyway, and that's a fact!
Superstitious

I ain't superstitious,
No such thing as bad luck.
I ain't superstitious,
I couldn't really give a f**k.
Take your stupid superstitions,
And find some other paranoidal,
Chickens**t, sissy, worm, and, tell it to him

68. "Preacher" by Ray Wylie Hubbard
Preacher come by today
Preacher come by today
He talked a whole lot but didn’t have much to say

Told me of a place with streets is gold
Told me of a place with streets of gold
He went on to say that God and the devil both want my soul

Said my life was empty, something was missing
Said my life was empty, something was missing
Carried on and on about how his Savior lived in the world above this one

My woman she was hanging clothes on the line
My woman she was hanging clothes on the line
I said “Look out yonder preacher
Now tell me have you ever seen anything as fine”

See how she moves slow
See how she moves slow
You can see I ain’t missing nothing when she stoop down low

Preacher closed his Bible and he put his hat on his head
He closed his Bible and he put his hat on his head
He took off down the road, must have been something I said.

72. "Rapture" by Hurt
In the life of the wrong a love lingered on,
Love lingered on to frustration.
And if our love is so wrong, what should we do alone?
Or am I just a picture in a photograph?
Why are we stuck in this pantomime fearing a god who died?
One who would not deny lovers?
And I don't care what they say, if what you need is your faith,
Then take a look at my face and know

That till your rapture falls to pieces
Until your rapture falls to pieces
Find in me the room to breathe,
Simple things like suffering
Life had gone this way
Life is gone this way

Still in the life of the wrong we all moved along
Another life evolved to gestation
And so we made our way with the mistake we made
But she was just a picture from a photograph

So she walked in the baby's room
Knowing what she should do leave me in
Absolute horror
She put her hand on its lip she gave it
One last kiss
And sang some tune that went

Until your rapture falls to pieces
Till your rapture falls to pieces
Find in me the room to breathe,
Simple things are suffering

And I would and I would, destroy your god
Yes I would if I could destroy your god
Because you're born again
Until you're worn again

Until your rapture falls to pieces
Till your rapture falls to pieces
Find in me the room to breathe,
Sinful things like suffering
Till your rapture falls to pieces
Till your rapture falls to pieces

But, if this must be, then burn with me
Anything
Just don't leave
So find in me the room to breathe
Sinful things like suffering
Till your rapture falls to pieces

She swore she heard the voice of Jesus
Telling her it was wrong to keep it

And one more thing, it looked like me
Back when it breathed
Rest in peace
Until the rapture comes to meet us

I love cranking this one up in my car with the windows down... :headbang:

Nobody does it better than Monty Python. From the "Meaning of Life":
O Lord, please don't burn us,
Don't grill or toast your flock,
Don't put us on a barbecue,
Or simmer us in stock,
Don't braise us or bake or boil us,
Or stir-fry us in a wok.
Oh please don't lightly poach us,
Or baste us with hot fat,
Don't fricassee or roast us,
Or boil us in a vat,
And please don't stick thy servants, Lord,
In a Rotissomat.

75. Dire Straits' Industrial Disease
Not exactly "Atheist-Themed" There's couple good lines...

"Philosophy is useless theology is worse" and

"Two men say theyre jesus one of them must be wrong..."
"Meanwhile the first jesus says I'd cure it soon
Abolish monday mornings and friday afternoons
The other one's on a hunger strike he's dying by degrees
How come jesus gets industrial disease?"

Warning lights are flashing down at quality control
Somebody threw a spanner and they threw him in the hole
Theres rumors in the loading bay and anger in the town
Somebody blew the whistle and the walls came down
Theres a meeting in the boardroom theyre trying to trace the smell
Theres leaking in the washroom theres a sneak in personnel
Somewhere in the corridors someone was heard to sneeze
goodness me could this be industrial disease?

The caretaker was crucified for sleeping at his post
Theyre refusing to be pacified its him they blame the most
The watchdogs got rabies the foremans got fleas
And everyones concerned about industrial disease
Theres panic on the switchboard tongues are ties in knots
Some come out in sympathy some come out in spots
Some blame the management some the employees
And everybody knows its the industrial disease

The work force is disgusted downs tools and walks
Innocence is injured experience just talks
Everyone seeks damages and everyone agrees
That these are classic symptoms of a monetary squeeze
On itv and bbc they talk about the curse
Philosophy is useless theology is worse
History boils over theres an economics freeze
Sociologists invent words that mean industrial disease

Doctor parkinson declared Im not surprised to see you here
Youve got smokers cough from smoking, brewers droop from drinking beer
I dont know how you came to get the betty davis knees
But worst of all young man youve got industrial disease
He wrote me a prescription he said you are depressed
But Im glad you came to see me to get this off your chest
Come back and see me later - next patient please
Send in another victim of industrial disease

I go down to speakers corner Im thunderstruck
They got free speech, tourists, police in trucks
Two men say theyre jesus one of them must be wrong
Theres a protest singer singing a protest song - he says
they wanna have a war to keep us on our knees
They wanna have a war to keep their factories
They wanna have a war to stop us buying japanese
They wanna have a war to stop industrial disease
Theyre pointing out the enemy to keep you deaf and blind
They wanna sap your energy incarcerate your mind
They give you rule brittania, gassy beer, page three
Two weeks in espana and sunday striptease
Meanwhile the first jesus says Id cure it soon
Abolish monday mornings and friday afternoons
The other ones on a hunger strike hes dying by degrees
How come jesus gets industrial disease

77. Bad Religion - Atheist Peace
I cant believe this one hasn't been mentioned!!!

Maybe it’s too late for intellectual debate,
but a residue of confusion remains.

Changing with the times,
and developmentally tortured minds
are average the citizen’s sources of pain.

Tell me what we’re fighting for—
I don’t remember anymore,
only temporary reprieve

And the world might cease
if we fail to tame the beast
from the faith that you release
comes an atheist peace.

Atheist peace.

Political forces render
bitter cold winds of discontent,
and the modern age emerged triumphantly.
But now it seemed we've stalled,
And it’s time to de-evolve
and relive the dark chapters of history

Tell me what we’re fighting for—
No progress ever came from war,
only a false sense of increase

and the world won’t wait
for the truth upon a plate
but we’re ready now to feast on an atheist peace.

Atheist peace

I *really* like this guy, atheist rap - Greydon Square http://www.thecomptoneffect.com/music/

(Verse 1)
I'm like the Atheist spokesman
That why I come under fire and pressure attacks like Rex Grossman
Yea this game is intense
I been sayin it since agnostics people been playin the fence
They keep sayin its the same in a sense
That evolution requires faith, that universe just came to exist
First of all, microevolution been proven
In the same way that sound waves let you listen to music
And macroevolution is the system of change
At or above the level of the species inflicted with change
That's microevolution on a grand scale we can't even word
because our life span's too short to observe
"But carbon dating is flawed"
"Its half life is 5730 years, and that supports our cause"
Now that'd be great if we used it to date
But since we don't then I'm a question that argument's weight
We use potassium argon to date to date the globe
Not carbon 12 or carbon 14 not none of those
So before you attack Grey go get ya facts straight
Because in the facts race, your God comes into last place

(Chorus)
Belief in Gods, we can fix that
Irrational thoughts we get dispatched
It may be hard be we'll get back
In the position to just to end that

(Verse 2)
To battle me you need to reason clearly
Now I'm not sayin fear me
But at least be versed in punctuated equilibrium theory
Grand unified fields, quantum mechanics and dark planets
With logic that's sharper than a blade of d'Artagnan's
To destroy arguments of creationists who cant stand it
Then they try and hit me with the wager
Who? Pascal's wager. Who? Pascal's wager.
Now that's a fool's bet
And against the intelligent it's used less
Really? You bet
This aint nothing new, they use it on kids
But for those who don't know it goes a little like this
Wouldn't you rather believe in God and be wrong
Then to not believe in God and be wrong
If you believe in God and your wrong you've lost nothing
But if you don't believe and you're wrong its all suffering
The problem is you can try it on anything
Switch the Gods around and apply it to anything
The Flyin Spaghetti Monster, Zeus, Amin, Ra
Krishna, Odin, Baal and then Allah
Which one of em's our God?
None of em all false
And blame it on the Atheists its always our fault
Except it never is
So don't get mad at us we just showin ya'll the evidence

(Chorus)
Belief in Gods, we can fix that
Irrational thoughts we get dispatched
It may be hard be we'll get back
In the position to just to end that

Grand Unified Theory

I'm a make the fundies hate me
They gon' need a new reason to shut down rap
But they wont shut down rap that degrades women though huh.
They wont shut down rap that talks about sellin crack though huh

81. I'm A Huge Tull Fan
You can find a number of Tull lyrics that speak to the hypocrisy. Read the lyrics to "A Passion Play" or even Aqualung. There are times when the message is designed to be ambiguous. Great stuff.

82. National brotherhood week, by Tom Lehrer
From the album: That was the year that was.

One week of every year is designated national brotherhood week.
During national brotherhood week various special events are arranged to drive home the message of brotherhood.
This year, for example, on the first day of the week Malcolm X was killed which gives you an idea of how effective the whole thing is.
I'm sure we all agree that we ought to love one another and I know there are people in the world that do not love their fellow human beings and I hate people like that.
Here's a song about national brotherhood week.

Oh, the white folks hate the black folks,
And the black folks hate the white folks.
To hate all but the right folks
Is an old established rule.

But during national brotherhood week, national brotherhood week,
Lena Horne and sheriff Clarke are dancing cheek to cheek.
It's fun to eulogize
The people you despise,
As long as you don't let 'em in your school.

Oh, the poor folks hate the rich folks,
And the rich folks hate the poor folks.
All of my folks hate all of your folks,
It's American as apple pie.

But during national brotherhood week, national brotherhood week,
New Yorkers love the Puerto Ricans 'cause it's very chic.
Step up and shake the hand
Of someone you can't stand.
You can tolerate him if you try.

Oh, the Protestants hate the Catholics,
And the Catholics hate the Protestants,
And the Hindus hate the Moslems,
And everybody hates the Jews.

But during national brotherhood week, national brotherhood week,
It's national everyone-smile-at-one-another-hood week.
Be nice to people who
Are inferior to you.
It's only for a week, so have no fear.
Be grateful that it doesn't last all year!

83. "The Hand of the Almighty" by John R. Butler
Also known as "God Will Fuck You Up"

VERSE 1
Oh, sinner, do not stray
From the straight and narrow way
For the Lord is surely watching what you do
If you approach the Devil's den
Turn 'round don't enter in
Lest the hand of the almighty fall on you.

CHORUS:
He'll fuck you up (he'll fuck you up)
Yes, God will fuck you up
If you dare to disobey his stern command.
He'll fuck you up (he'll fuck you up)
Don't you know he'll fuck you up
So you better do some prayin' while you can.

VERSE 2
Long ago a man named Lot
Had a wife he thought was hot
But she could not stop her black and sinful ways.
You know it was her own damn fault
When God turned that bitch to salt.
That's the way he used to work back in those days:

CHORUS:
He fucked 'em up (he fucked 'em up)
He really fucked 'em up
When the people went and turned their backs on him
He can fuck you up (he'll fuck you up)
No shit he'll fuck you up
Just like he fucked the people up back then.

VERSE 3
I used to have a friend named Ray
Who walked that evil way
He cursed and drank and broke his neighbor's fence
You know Ray was full aware
That some sheep were over there
And he knew them in the Biblical sense.

CHORUS:
God fucked him up (he fucked him up)
He went and fucked Ray up
Went and paid him back for all his wicked sins.
He fucked him up (he fucked him up)
Fucked that boy completely up
Now he's married to a Presbyterian.

84. For the more inflammatory atheists among us...

Slayer -- Cult

As an aside, many people accuse Slayer of being satanic, and they certainly do use satanic/occult symbols. I've heard several interviews, however, where the members stated that they simply used satanic imagery to piss Christians off, basically. There's a lot of controversy with the band (including accusations of white supremacy leanings, though the evidence for that strikes me as pretty ridiculous), but no one can deny that they play some kick-ass metal songs...

Oppression is the holy law
In God I distrust
In time His monuments will fall
Like ashes to dust
Is war and greed the masters plan?
The bible's where it all began
Its propaganda sells despair
And spreads the virus everywhere

Religion is hate
Religion is fear
Religion is war
Religion is rape
Religion's obscene
Religion's a whore

The pestilence is Jesus Christ
There never was a sacrifice
No man upon the crucifix
Beware the cult of purity
Infectious imbecility
I've made my choice. Six six six

Corruption breeds the pedophile
Don't pray for the priest
Confession finds the lonely child
God preys on the weak
You think your soul can still be saved
I think you're fucking miles away
Scream out loud here's where you begin
Forgive me father for I have sinned

Religion is hate
Religion is fear
Religion is war
Religion is rape
Religion's obscene
Religion's a whore

The target's Fucking Jesus Christ
I would've lead the sacrifice
And nailed him to the crucifix
Beware the cult of purity
Infectious imbecility
I've made my choice. Six six six

Jesus is pain
Jesus is gore
Jesus is the blood
That's spilled in war
He's everything
He's all things dead
He's pulling on the trigger
Pointed at your head

Through fear you're sold into the fraud
Revelation revolution
I see through your Christ Illusion

The war on terror just drags along
My war with God is growing strong
His propaganda sells despair
And spreads the violence everywhere

Religion is hate
Religion is fear
Religion is war
Religion is rape
Religion's obscene
Religion's a whore

There is no fuckin' Jesus Christ
There never was a sacrifice
No man upon the crucifix
Beware the cult of purity
Infectious imbecility
I've made my choice. Six six six

87. YEE-HAW-W-W!!!
Here's a cheery little square dance tune from the 90's, so in some places it is outdated. But mostly it's still relevant. TOO damn relevant...

"Right-Wing Roundup" - From Rev. Billy C. Wirtz, on his album "Songs of Faith and Inflammation:"

Now all join hands...and circle to the right...here we go!

All join hands and circle to the right,
Specially if you're rich and white,
A big step backward, close your mind,
Hey! It's a right-wing roundup time!

Now close your ranks...and everybody bow!

Bow to the big-money interest groups,
Save your country, send a little loot,
Swing it to the right and avoid the middle,
Fun to dance? Hell, we own the fiddle!

Now here we go!

Hey hey, what a fun occasion,
Life is great when you're Caucasian,
Your credit's good, feeling fine,
Hey! It's a right-wing roundup time!

SPOKEN: Hey there honey...I couldn't help but notice that swell Operation Rescue charm bracelet of yours. What's that? That's my NRA tie tack, that's a gen-u-wine hollow-point!

Now listen to the rap group, make a face,
That's not music, that's a disgrace!
Gangsta rappers are doing big biz,
Your kids run around yelling, "Whoop, there it is!"

SPOKEN: My God, look at these pictures. That's a parakeet!

Hey! Cut those funds and do-si-do,
NEA has got to go,
Is is art or is it messy?
We don't know, check with Jesse (Helms, that is).

Hey, hey, we're right on track,
One step forward and eight steps back,
Swing your partner, make her smile,
Grab her on the ass, Bob Packwood style.

SPOKEN: Boy, I tell you, this is more fun than issuing a subpoena. Honey, you think maybe you and I could...introduce a little motion into the chambers later on?

Now see that boy that's dancing there,
In the Army suit and the nice short hair,
He might dance just a little TOO well,
Better send him home, don't ask, don't tell.

Now everybody ready? Swing W-A-A-A-Y to the right!

Now swing it to the right and take a position,
Form that Christian Coalition,
Thank Pat Robertson for redemption,
Praise the Lord for the tax exemption.

Now all join hands...and block the clinic:

Now block that clinic with a great big shout,
Hand those gory little pictures out,
Join the militia in your town,
Party in your bunker underground.

SPOKEN: What's say you and I go play a little game of Hide The Amendment, there, baby?

Now this dance is almost done,
We might've had a little bit too much fun,
So pee in the bottle if you don't mind,
We've had a right-wing roundup time!

Now promenade home. And lock your doors!

88. Opiate by Tool
Choices always were a problem for you
What you need is someone strong to guide you

Deaf and blind and dumb and born to follow
What you need is someone strong to guide you...
Like me
Like me
Like me
Like me

If you want to get your soul to heaven
Trust in me, now don't you judge or question
You are broken now, but faith can heal you
Just do everything i tell you to do

Deaf and blind and dumb and born to follow
What you need is someone strong to guide you
Deaf and blind and dumb and born to follow
Let me lay my holy hand a, hand upon you

My god's will
Becomes me
When he speaks
He speaks through me
He has needs
Like i do
We both want
To rape you

Jesus christ, why don't you come save my life, now
Open my eyes, blind me with your light, now
Jesus christ, why don't you come save my life, now
Open my eyes, blind me with your lies, now

If you want to get your soul to heaven
Trust in me, now don't you judge or question
You are broken now, but faith can heal you
Just do everything i tell you to do
Jesus christ, why don't you come save my life, now
Open my eyes, blind me with your light, now
Jesus christ, why don't you come save my life, now
Open my eyes, blind me with your lies, now

Deaf and blind and dumb and born to follow
Let me lay my holy hand a, hand upon you

My god's will
Becomes me
When he speaks
He speaks through me
He has needs
Like i do
We both want
To rape you!

89. What if God smoked Cannabis?
Written by Bob Rivers. A local college DJ loves to play the recording of Joan Osborne singing it and spoofing her own golden hit, One of Us. She has such a lovely voice. (There was a Catholic cleric who said that "One of Us" came close to "Catholic baiting". He hated her because she supported Planned Parenthood. Jesus H. F. Christ.

Ok, here is the song:

If God had long hair
And a goatee
And if His eyes were pretty glazed
If He looked spaced out
Would you buy His story?
Would you believe
He had an eye infection?

And yeah, yeah, God looks baked
Yeah, yeah, God smells good
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
What if God smoked Cannabis?
Hit the bong like some of us
Drove a Tie-died micro bus
And He subscribes to Rolling Stone

When God made this place
In the beginning
Did He plant any seeds?
Or did He put them there
For Adam and Eve
So they…trade;d be hungry
For the apple that the snake
Was always offering

And yeah, yeah, God rolls great
Yeah, yeah, God smells good
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
What if God smoked Cannabis?
Do you suppose He had a buzz
When He made the platypus?
When He created Earth our home
Does He like Pearl Jam or The Stones?
And do you think He rolls his own?
Up there in Heaven on the throne

And when the Saints go marching home
Maybe He sits and smokes a bowl
