Dungeons and Dragons 2: Wrath of the Screenwriters
Seriously. Is it possible they could maybe get someone to write a dungeons and dragons movie that oh....say....seems like it was written by someone who actually played the game?

They throw in little things like the Gem of True Seeing, or certain spell effects, and think that makes up for the piss poor story?

How bout a Dungeons and Dragons movie that...oh...doesn't even have a dragon in it? How bout one from another setting other than this feux Grayhawk world.

I see movies like this and I wonder how these people made it in Hollywood. I'm not kidding when I say that I could write a better movie than this drivel.

A human fighter, human barbarian, human rogue, human cleric, and elven wizard. That's rich. Oh and lets kill off the cleric really quick by him doing something idiotic. I could go on, but I was sorely disapointed.

1. I hope you weren't expecting a lot...
I actually thought it was an improvement from the original theatrical D&D movie from 4-5 years back. Granted, as I said in my post below when I asked if there was hope for it being ok, watching folks stand around & piss in a cup would be an improvement over the D&D movie 4-5 years ago.

At least there was no beholder being distracted by a rock being thrown in this one or elves living in a giant tree that looked like it was out of Swiss Family Robinson... though, the lich in this movie was kind of superfluous and looked more like a zombie orc instead of one of the baddest of bad guys in D&D-dom.

I'm guessing they didn't have a big enough make-up/FX budget to have a dwarf or halfling on camera. I did think it was an interesting twist to have the two women being the party muscle holding off the charging bad guys while the two men huddled under cover trying to open the door.

2. I kept my expectations low
yet was still disapointed for many reasons. Crap is crap. I don't care if it's elephant crap or mouse crap, i'm not gonna put it in my mouth.

There were parts I liked. When they got into the goblin village and searched the shaman's hut, and the wizard cast detect magic and found the ring, but said she needed time to study it. I liked that. Then for no reason a white dragon shows up and the cleric decides it'd be a smart idea to test his reflex save. Just dumb. Why even have him along.

It's not even the parts. Many of the parts I liked. I just didn't like how they were fit together. It was cheesy and stupid. Shallow. I don't care if it's a D&D movie or a fantasy movie...the story has to be decent. This was just a shitty sci fi channel movie with dragons in it. It might as well have starred coolio and bruce campbell.

I didn't hate it (and I expected to). It wasn't great, but I didn't hate it, which is saying something. It was watchable at least.

I thought it was definitely an improvement over the last one in that it actually used D&D (spells, items, lore, etc.) a lot more. I liked how the thief was used for example. Also, the acting was actually better than I expected (not saying it was good, just better than I expected).

The Cleric being killed did seem a bit abrupt and stupid, although in defense of that, I THINK it was because he thought the dragon was about to discover him, so he jumped out to distract him and give the others a chance. Not so out of line w/ what a Good Lawful Cleric might do.

I was dissapointed that we didn't get to see some better fights scenes against, for instance, the Goblins in the village that was deserted or some orcs etc. I guess they didn't have the budget.

All in all I thought it was tolerable as opposed to insufferable, like the first movie.

5. I think the cleric
thought his cover was blown, so he jumped out to try and go down
bravely rather than cowering behind some goblin huts.

Granted, the white dragon was there for no real reason... minions of the lich or of Damodar would have been more appropriate. But, at least they had the white dragon breathing frost/cold.

I don't know why they had the black dragon god breathing fire when his mountain tomb was properly filled with gas.

6. Yeah, That's What I Thought About The Cleric. About that "Black Dragon"
Was it really a Black Dragon, or was it a Draco Lich? It looked like a Draco Lich...Not sure if that makes a difference regarding it's breath weapon though...

7. i think they did mention undead dragon
but, they did mention the dragon god was black before, and with the gas there, it seemed appropriate.

Or, do black dragons breathe acid, now that I think of it?

I'm at work & without my books.

Red = fire
Blue = Electricity
White = cold
black = ???

8. Yeah, Black=Acid
Don't know what breath weapon(s) a draco lich would have, it's possible it may have gas and fire though. Also remember though, that the fire the dragon was breathing need not necessarily have been a breath weapon, but a spell...

9. As far as a Dracolich...
Edited on Tue Oct-25-05 03:03 AM by Solon
depends on what it was when living, if I remember correctly. Black Dracolich would have a line of Acid, Red Dracolich cone of fire, etc. even though, missing their scales, the player wouldn't know what to expect, obviously.
