What fav sci-fi movie(s) do you want to see in text?.....
Ok so I was just feeling a bit mischievous but maybe there is a case for it...?

Of course now-a-daze every big screen success gets a novelization it seems. But maybe there's an older classic that could benifit...

What would the benefits be...
Maybe more exploration of the characters?
Expansion of the universe (maybe this is a particular benefit for some of the older movies that didn't have the tech or budget for to show the more fantastic aspects of the universe)?
Addition of subplots that a movie wouldn't have allowed time for?
Expansion of scenes?

Lets see perhaps "The Day the Earth Stood Still" (not based on a book afaik)
A book could include a prelude with Klaatu being sent on his assignment to Earth. Picture a large hall filled with representatives of the 'civilized races' of the galaxy. Or a scene on an ancient time where the Robots had to 'contain' a violent race.
We could learn more about Klaatu certainly. He took his death and resurrection pretty calmly but how calmly really? How convinced was he that EArth was worth the effort? Did he have loved ones back home that would be distraught at his shortened life span?

So, I first thought to post this as a little (very little) joke but hey maybe there's some interesting ideas for discussion after all.

1. The Day the Earth Stood Still
It's based on Harry Bates' 1940 work Farewell to the Master, and it ends with a tone decidedly different from that of the film.

While I'm at it, This Island Earth is a much better story than film.

Honestly, it's just a fluke that I happened to know Bates' work, because I own a nice little anthology called Reel Future that compiles a bunch of stories on which sci-fi films were based.

2. Dark City
One of the best sci-fi films of all time, IMHO. It would make a great book, especially if told from 2 different POV's, one human and one alien. I'd like to know more about the alien's and the point of their experiment.

Good novelizations of some anime films would be good too ... I'm thinking what if William Gibson or Richard K Morgan wrote 'Akira'? Of if China Mieville wrote 'Spirited Away'?

Oh, and someone ought to write books of the Lord of the Rings series ... that would be cool. ;)
