Paramount Officially Announces Trek XI For Christmas 2008
(snip)
Paramount Pictures today officially announced the return of Star Trek on Christmas Day 2008.

"If there’s something I’m dying to see, it’s the brilliance and optimism of Roddenberry’s world brought back to the big screen," J.J. Abrams was quoted in a Paramount press release, which in its title again confirmed Abrams will be directing the new Trek film. Abrams continued: " and Roberto Orci] wrote an amazing script that embraces and respects Trek canon, but charts its own course. Our goal is to make a picture for everyone — life-long fans and the uninitiated. Needless to say, I am honored and excited to be part of this next chapter of Star Trek."

2. Sounds that way
Which makes this all the more interesting. I agree with those who are skeptical of prequel ideas but I'm not hard line about it. There was an idea floated around last year I think of "rebooting" Star Trek from JMS (Babylon 5 creator) which I think was an idea worth some consideration.

This new movie is different but in a way it could have the same affect particularly if it is put into new hands. This movie could be a critical point in Trek's future. If it fails Trek will still be a money making brand but I doubt we'll ever again see new Trek creations other than retrospectives or remastering old stuff. If they truly do bring in new fans and make it interesting...who knows

3. ok, I buy Damon as Kirk
And Sinise as McCoy (as long as they do a good job of making Sinise not look so old), but Brody as Spock? no way. Plus, isn't this supposed to be in the academy? Shouldn't they then get some actors who are still in their 20s at most?

4. Sinise would make a good McCoy
...if they were doing a remake of the original series (heaven forbid). He's too old now to play a younger McCoy. But I can see Brody as a younger academy-aged Spock compared to how old Nimoy was in TOS.

5. Matt Damon is perfect a Kirk
He has the same boyish looks, and the same streak of mischieviousness. Damon is an accomplished actor. As to the rest of the cast, I think Sinise is too dour to play McCoy, and Brody lacks the comedic talent to pull a Spock.

Who could possibly play Scotty?
