L. Frank Baum's world has always been ripe for reinterpretation.

2. This version reminds me of Tad Williams "Otherland" |
|
if you havent read it, it takes place in a series of virtual reality worlds. Very rich people pay a lot of money to create virtual worlds they can control / visit / live in. One guy creates an entire Oz world, with himself as the Scarecrow. But the computers break down, and massive things go wrong in all these worlds. In Oz, there has been a years long war between the Tin Man and the Scarecrow, with the Munchkins enslaved as factory workers to make munitions. Pretty dark.

Tad Williams is one of my favorite authors. I've been wondering if there are any plans to make movies from his works...

5. I'd recommend everything he's done, really. |
|
But go back and start with the Memory, Sorrow and Thorn series - first book is The Dragonbone Chair.

7. I keep hoping he'll return to that milieu someday. |

Do something with Simon as an adult. Governing problems. Marital problems. It could be cool.
