Did Star Trek influence your politics?
I say it did influence mine. When I was a teenager I really glomed onto the notion of IDIC (infinite diversity in infinite combinations) that out of the many differences we all have we can come together as one without negating or downplaying those differences.

The prime directive was important to me as well. Even though Kirk and Co did not follow it very often, the philosophy behind it was good, that all worlds/civilizations should be allowed to develop along their own natural path without influence from an outside force.

I think Star Trek made me the lefty I am today.

1. I would have been a lefty without Star Trek, but
i do love the liberal principles the series developed around.

2. Most shows I watch feature lefties
Star Trek, MASH, Seinfeld etc. I guess If I was a freeper I would gravitate toward other shows, perhaps like

"Bigots in the City"
"Star Conquest"
"Straight eye to oppress the queer guy"

and my personal favorite "Friends, the KKK revival show"

4. Friends is a KKK revival show?
I thought Matthew Perry and Jennifer Aniston were Dems.

3. All I ever needed to know I learned from Star Trek
Edited on Mon Nov-29-04 02:34 PM by YankeyMCC

This is an actually book, I don't recall the author and the title may be slightly differently worded. I have it somewhere buried deep in my stacks (carboard boxes filled with books that fill my basement :) )

I can't call it a political book but it definately started me down a path of looking for books to help me articulate my personal beliefs.

I never gave it much thought before but this book made me realize how much Star Trek did affect my thinking. I'm sure I would've still ended up pretty much where I am politically without Star Trek or any TV. Real life experiences and my own disposition have more to do with shaping me, and I assume most people, than anything I see or read.

That said I will say Star Trek helped me to articulate those feelings, and helped teach me different ways of looking at the world around me.

Edit: Found the book on buy.com: http://www.buy.com/retail/product.asp?sku=30635965&loc=106&sp=1
