References for basic farming and equipment |
|
Does anyone know of good references, books, web sites, etc. that are primers for basic farming practices; how to open up a field, what the various implements do and how to use them, how to properly seed a field, when is it too wet to run equipment, the BASIC basics? I have about 20 acres that's going into some kind of grain hay this year, probably, and I'm an amateur at this, having spent most of my time in recent decades in pursuit of other endeavors, i.e., "work & career". I know about the farm adviser and have talked to various people etc., and have the basic idea, but am wondering if there's basic references about farming practices and equipment that y'all have found to be useful. also starting a garden this year! My first. This will be very modest, thinking of trying the "square foot garden" technique.

1. I have two great books |
|
one is 'Back to Basics' put out by Readers Digest. I believe it's out of print but is still easy to find on amazon.com.
the other is 'the Self-Sufficient Life and How to Live It' by John Seymour.
both books also tell about animal husbandry, canning, making candles, making soap, etc...

2. Check out the Foxfire Book at your library |
|
I think they have a whole chapter on tools and implements.

3. Carla Emery's Encyclopedia of Country Living is a good basic text. |
|
Also, anything and everything by Gene Logsdon.
