Twenty years ago, the Mother Earth News was sold to a New York publisher more interested in teaching people how to build a gazebo in their back yard than in telling people about the latest solar, ram pump, or off-grid technology. The entire staff of the venerated magazine was summarily canned. They all came together and brainstormed a new magazine that would fill the void left by Mother Earth News' decline into vapidity.

Twenty years on, and BackHome Magazine remains true to its roots: this is *the* magazine for those seeking the DIY, sustainable lifestyle. No politics, no doom and gloom, just plenty of articles on sustainable construction, home schooling, livestock, home-based business, healthy cooking, homesteading, permaculture, etc. etc. More recently, BackHome has also begun to feature articles aimed at urban sustainability.

1. Have a friend here in L.A. -- with perhaps the most thriving backyard garden I know! -- that
...also recommends it.

Thanks!

2. So you're saying that there is no publication called Mother Earth News?
Someone gave me some copies once and it was in 1989! So thanks for letting me know that! (I always get it confused with Mother Jones, LOL.)

4. We suscribe to Mother Earth News.
It is one of our Bibles.
We anxiously await its arrival in our mailbox every two months,
and usually read it cover to cover the first day.

Our other "bible" is Country & Small Stock Journal.

I haven't run across Backhome, but will be checking it out.

6. Same here for Mother Earth News
I find the majority of their articles to be quite informative and illuminating. I've taken several small ideas from their pages and used them on my own homesteading project.

Countryside is a great magazine as well, but it's a little "beyond" where I'm at right now with only about 2 acres, and half of that as woodlot.

5. Thank you for this post.
When I first saw it, I subscribed to Back Home. Our first issue came this week. It looks like it will be great.
